إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ ﴿1﴾ لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ ﴿2﴾ خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ ﴿3﴾ إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّا ﴿4﴾ وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّا ﴿5﴾ فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنۢبَثًّا ﴿6﴾ وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا ثَلَٰثَةً ﴿7﴾ فَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ﴿8﴾ وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ ﴿9﴾ وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ﴿10﴾ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ ﴿11﴾ فِى جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ﴿12﴾ ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿13﴾ وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ ﴿14﴾ عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ ﴿15﴾ مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ ﴿16﴾

Tafsir of Surah Al-Waaqia (Arberry: A. J. Arberry)

إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ ﴿1﴾

English Translation

When the Occurrence occurs, (1)

English Transliteration

Itha waqaAAati alwaqiAAatu (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

When the Terror descends (1)

لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ ﴿2﴾

English Translation

There is, at its occurrence, no denial. (2)

English Transliteration

Laysa liwaqAAatiha kathibatun (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

(and none denies its descending) (2)

خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ ﴿3﴾

English Translation

It will bring down [some] and raise up [others]. (3)

English Transliteration

Khafidatun rafiAAatun (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

abasing, exalting, (3)

إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّا ﴿4﴾

English Translation

When the earth is shaken with convulsion (4)

English Transliteration

Itha rujjati alardu rajjan (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

when the earth shall be rocked (4)

وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّا ﴿5﴾

English Translation

And the mountains are broken down, crumbling (5)

English Transliteration

Wabussati aljibalu bassan (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

and the mountains crumbled (5)

فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنۢبَثًّا ﴿6﴾

English Translation

And become dust dispersing. (6)

English Transliteration

Fakanat habaan munbaththan (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

and become a dust, scattered, (6)

وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا ثَلَٰثَةً ﴿7﴾

English Translation

And you become [of] three kinds: (7)

English Transliteration

Wakuntum azwajan thalathatan (7)

Tafsir of Verse 7

and you shall be three bands -- (7)

فَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ﴿8﴾

English Translation

Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right? (8)

English Transliteration

Faashabu almaymanati ma ashabu almaymanati (8)

Tafsir of Verse 8

Companions of the Right (O Companions of the Right!) (8)

وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ ﴿9﴾

English Translation

And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? (9)

English Transliteration

Waashabu almashamati ma ashabu almashamati (9)

Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) (9)

وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ﴿10﴾

English Translation

And the forerunners, the forerunners - (10)

English Transliteration

Waalssabiqoona alssabiqoona (10)

Tafsir of Verse 10

and the Outstrippers: the Outstrippers (10)

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ ﴿11﴾

English Translation

Those are the ones brought near [to Allah] (11)

English Transliteration

Olaika almuqarraboona (11)

Tafsir of Verse 11

those are they brought nigh the Throne, (11)

فِى جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ﴿12﴾

English Translation

In the Gardens of Pleasure, (12)

English Transliteration

Fee jannati alnnaAAeemi (12)

Tafsir of Verse 12

in the Gardens of Delight (12)

ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿13﴾

English Translation

A [large] company of the former peoples (13)

English Transliteration

Thullatun mina alawwaleena (13)

Tafsir of Verse 13

(a throng of the ancients (13)

وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ ﴿14﴾

English Translation

And a few of the later peoples, (14)

English Transliteration

Waqaleelun mina alakhireena (14)

Tafsir of Verse 14

and how few of the later folk) (14)

عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ ﴿15﴾

English Translation

On thrones woven [with ornament], (15)

English Transliteration

AAala sururin mawdoonatin (15)

Tafsir of Verse 15

upon close-wrought couches (15)

مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ ﴿16﴾

English Translation

Reclining on them, facing each other. (16)

English Transliteration

Muttakieena AAalayha mutaqabileena (16)

reclining upon them, set face to face, (16)
