وَٱلشَّمْسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا ﴿1﴾ وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا ﴿2﴾ وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا ﴿3﴾ وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰهَا ﴿4﴾ وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا ﴿5﴾ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا ﴿6﴾ وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا ﴿7﴾ فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَىٰهَا ﴿8﴾ قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا ﴿9﴾ وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا ﴿10﴾ كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَىٰهَآ ﴿11﴾ إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشْقَىٰهَا ﴿12﴾ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقْيَٰهَا ﴿13﴾ فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسَوَّىٰهَا ﴿14﴾ وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَٰهَا ﴿15﴾

Tafsir of Surah Ash-Shams (Arberry: A. J. Arberry)

وَٱلشَّمْسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا ﴿1﴾

English Translation

By the sun and its brightness (1)

English Transliteration

Waalshshamsi waduhaha (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

By the sun and his morning brightness (1)

وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا ﴿2﴾

English Translation

And [by] the moon when it follows it (2)

English Transliteration

Waalqamari itha talaha (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

and by the moon when she follows him, (2)

وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا ﴿3﴾

English Translation

And [by] the day when it displays it (3)

English Transliteration

Waalnnahari itha jallaha (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

and by the day when it displays him (3)

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰهَا ﴿4﴾

English Translation

And [by] the night when it covers it (4)

English Transliteration

Waallayli itha yaghshaha (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

and by the night when it enshrouds him! (4)

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا ﴿5﴾

English Translation

And [by] the sky and He who constructed it (5)

English Transliteration

Waalssamai wama banaha (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

By the heaven and That which built it (5)

وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا ﴿6﴾

English Translation

And [by] the earth and He who spread it (6)

English Transliteration

Waalardi wama tahaha (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

and by the earth and That which extended it! (6)

وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا ﴿7﴾

English Translation

And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it (7)

English Transliteration

Wanafsin wama sawwaha (7)

Tafsir of Verse 7

By the soul, and That which shaped it (7)

فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَىٰهَا ﴿8﴾

English Translation

And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness, (8)

English Transliteration

Faalhamaha fujooraha wataqwaha (8)

Tafsir of Verse 8

and inspired it to lewdness and godfearing! (8)

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا ﴿9﴾

English Translation

He has succeeded who purifies it, (9)

English Transliteration

Qad aflaha man zakkaha (9)

Tafsir of Verse 9

Prosperous is he who purifies it, (9)

وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا ﴿10﴾

English Translation

And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]. (10)

English Transliteration

Waqad khaba man dassaha (10)

Tafsir of Verse 10

and failed has he who seduces it. (10)

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَىٰهَآ ﴿11﴾

English Translation

Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression, (11)

English Transliteration

Kaththabat thamoodu bitaghwaha (11)

Tafsir of Verse 11

Thamood cried lies in their insolence (11)

إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشْقَىٰهَا ﴿12﴾

English Translation

When the most wretched of them was sent forth. (12)

English Transliteration

Ithi inbaAAatha ashqaha (12)

Tafsir of Verse 12

when the most wretched of them uprose, (12)

فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقْيَٰهَا ﴿13﴾

English Translation

And the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink." (13)

English Transliteration

Faqala lahum rasoolu Allahi naqata Allahi wasuqyaha (13)

Tafsir of Verse 13

then the Messenger of God said to them, 'The She-camel of God; let her drink!' (13)

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسَوَّىٰهَا ﴿14﴾

English Translation

But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them]. (14)

English Transliteration

Fakaththaboohu faAAaqarooha fadamdama AAalayhim rabbuhum bithanbihim fasawwaha (14)

Tafsir of Verse 14

But they cried him lies, and hamstrung her, so their Lord crushed them for their sin, and leveled them: (14)

وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَٰهَا ﴿15﴾

English Translation

And He does not fear the consequence thereof. (15)

English Transliteration

Wala yakhafu AAuqbaha (15)

Tafsir of Verse 15

and He fears not the issue thereof. (15)
