وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ ﴿1﴾ وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ ﴿2﴾ وَمَا خَلَقَ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰٓ ﴿3﴾ إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىٰ ﴿4﴾ فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَٱتَّقَىٰ ﴿5﴾ وَصَدَّقَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ﴿6﴾ فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ ﴿7﴾ وَأَمَّا مَنۢ بَخِلَ وَٱسْتَغْنَىٰ ﴿8﴾ وَكَذَّبَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ﴿9﴾ فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْعُسْرَىٰ ﴿10﴾ وَمَا يُغْنِى عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥٓ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰٓ ﴿11﴾ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا لَلْهُدَىٰ ﴿12﴾ وَإِنَّ لَنَا لَلْءَاخِرَةَ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ ﴿13﴾ فَأَنذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًا تَلَظَّىٰ ﴿14﴾

Tafsir of Surah Al-Lail (Yusuf Ali: Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ ﴿1﴾

English Translation

By the night when it covers (1)

English Transliteration

Waallayli itha yaghsha (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

By the Night as it conceals (the light); (1)

وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ ﴿2﴾

English Translation

And [by] the day when it appears (2)

English Transliteration

Waalnnahari itha tajalla (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

By the Day as it appears in glory; (2)

وَمَا خَلَقَ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰٓ ﴿3﴾

English Translation

And [by] He who created the male and female, (3)

English Transliteration

Wama khalaqa alththakara waalontha (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;- (3)

إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىٰ ﴿4﴾

English Translation

Indeed, your efforts are diverse. (4)

English Transliteration

Inna saAAyakum lashatta (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse. (4)

فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَٱتَّقَىٰ ﴿5﴾

English Translation

As for he who gives and fears Allah (5)

English Transliteration

Faamma man aAAta waittaqa (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), (5)

وَصَدَّقَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ﴿6﴾

English Translation

And believes in the best [reward], (6)

English Transliteration

Wasaddaqa bialhusna (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- (6)

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ ﴿7﴾

English Translation

We will ease him toward ease. (7)

English Transliteration

Fasanuyassiruhu lilyusra (7)

Tafsir of Verse 7

We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. (7)

وَأَمَّا مَنۢ بَخِلَ وَٱسْتَغْنَىٰ ﴿8﴾

English Translation

But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need (8)

English Transliteration

Waamma man bakhila waistaghna (8)

Tafsir of Verse 8

But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, (8)

وَكَذَّبَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ﴿9﴾

English Translation

And denies the best [reward], (9)

English Transliteration

Wakaththaba bialhusna (9)

Tafsir of Verse 9

And gives the lie to the best,- (9)

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْعُسْرَىٰ ﴿10﴾

English Translation

We will ease him toward difficulty. (10)

English Transliteration

Fasanuyassiruhu lilAAusra (10)

Tafsir of Verse 10

We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; (10)

وَمَا يُغْنِى عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥٓ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰٓ ﴿11﴾

English Translation

And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? (11)

English Transliteration

Wama yughnee AAanhu maluhu itha taradda (11)

Tafsir of Verse 11

Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit). (11)

إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا لَلْهُدَىٰ ﴿12﴾

English Translation

Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance. (12)

English Transliteration

Inna AAalayna lalhuda (12)

Tafsir of Verse 12

Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, (12)

وَإِنَّ لَنَا لَلْءَاخِرَةَ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ ﴿13﴾

English Translation

And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. (13)

English Transliteration

Wainna lana lalakhirata waaloola (13)

Tafsir of Verse 13

And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. (13)

فَأَنذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًا تَلَظَّىٰ ﴿14﴾

English Translation

So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. (14)

English Transliteration

Faanthartukum naran talaththa (14)

Tafsir of Verse 14

Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; (14)
