لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ﴿1﴾ وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ﴿2﴾ وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ ﴿3﴾ لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ ﴿4﴾ أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ ﴿5﴾ يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا ﴿6﴾ أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ ﴿7﴾ أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ ﴿8﴾ وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ ﴿9﴾ وَهَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ ﴿10﴾ فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ ﴿11﴾ وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ ﴿12﴾ فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ ﴿13﴾ أَوْ إِطْعَٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ ﴿14﴾ يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ ﴿15﴾ أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ ﴿16﴾ ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ ﴿17﴾ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ﴿18﴾ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ ﴿19﴾ عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ ﴿20﴾

Tafsir of Surah Al-Balad (Arberry: A. J. Arberry)

لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ﴿1﴾

English Translation

I swear by this city, Makkah - (1)

English Transliteration

La oqsimu bihatha albaladi (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

No! I swear by this land, (1)

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ﴿2﴾

English Translation

And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - (2)

English Transliteration

Waanta hillun bihatha albaladi (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

and thou art a lodger in this land; (2)

وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ ﴿3﴾

English Translation

And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], (3)

English Transliteration

Wawalidin wama walada (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

by the begetter, and that he begot, (3)

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ ﴿4﴾

English Translation

We have certainly created man into hardship. (4)

English Transliteration

Laqad khalaqna alinsana fee kabadin (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

indeed, We created man in trouble. (4)

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ ﴿5﴾

English Translation

Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? (5)

English Transliteration

Ayahsabu an lan yaqdira AAalayhi ahadun (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

What, does he think none has power over him, (5)

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا ﴿6﴾

English Translation

He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." (6)

English Transliteration

Yaqoolu ahlaktu malan lubadan (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? (6)

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ ﴿7﴾

English Translation

Does he think that no one has seen him? (7)

English Transliteration

Ayahsabu an lam yarahu ahadun (7)

Tafsir of Verse 7

What, does he think none has seen him? (7)

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ ﴿8﴾

English Translation

Have We not made for him two eyes? (8)

English Transliteration

Alam najAAal lahu AAaynayni (8)

Tafsir of Verse 8

Have We not appointed to him two eyes, (8)

وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ ﴿9﴾

English Translation

And a tongue and two lips? (9)

English Transliteration

Walisanan washafatayni (9)

Tafsir of Verse 9

and a tongue, and two lips, (9)

وَهَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ ﴿10﴾

English Translation

And have shown him the two ways? (10)

English Transliteration

Wahadaynahu alnnajdayni (10)

Tafsir of Verse 10

and guided him on the two highways? (10)

فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ ﴿11﴾

English Translation

But he has not broken through the difficult pass. (11)

English Transliteration

Fala iqtahama alAAaqabata (11)

Tafsir of Verse 11

Yet he has not assaulted the steep; (11)

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ ﴿12﴾

English Translation

And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? (12)

English Transliteration

Wama adraka ma alAAaqabatu (12)

Tafsir of Verse 12

and what shall teach thee what is the steep? (12)

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ ﴿13﴾

English Translation

It is the freeing of a slave (13)

English Transliteration

Fakku raqabatin (13)

Tafsir of Verse 13

The freeing of a slave, (13)

أَوْ إِطْعَٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ ﴿14﴾

English Translation

Or feeding on a day of severe hunger (14)

English Transliteration

Aw itAAamun fee yawmin thee masghabatin (14)

Tafsir of Verse 14

or giving food upon a day of hunger (14)

يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ ﴿15﴾

English Translation

An orphan of near relationship (15)

English Transliteration

Yateeman tha maqrabatin (15)

Tafsir of Verse 15

to an orphan near of kin (15)

أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ ﴿16﴾

English Translation

Or a needy person in misery (16)

English Transliteration

Aw miskeenan tha matrabatin (16)

Tafsir of Verse 16

or a needy man in misery; (16)

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ ﴿17﴾

English Translation

And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. (17)

English Transliteration

Thumma kana mina allatheena amanoo watawasaw bialssabri watawasaw bialmarhamati (17)

Tafsir of Verse 17

then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. (17)

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ﴿18﴾

English Translation

Those are the companions of the right. (18)

English Transliteration

Olaika ashabu almaymanati (18)

Tafsir of Verse 18

Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. (18)

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ ﴿19﴾

English Translation

But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left. (19)

English Transliteration

Waallatheena kafaroo biayatina hum ashabu almashamati (19)

Tafsir of Verse 19

And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; (19)

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ ﴿20﴾

English Translation

Over them will be fire closed in. (20)

English Transliteration

AAalayhim narun musadatun (20)

Tafsir of Verse 20

over them is a Fire covered down. (20)
