نٓ ۚ وَٱلْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ ﴿1﴾ مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍ ﴿2﴾ وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍ ﴿3﴾ وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ ﴿4﴾ فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ ﴿5﴾ بِأَييِّكُمُ ٱلْمَفْتُونُ ﴿6﴾ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ ﴿7﴾ فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ﴿8﴾ وَدُّوا۟ لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ ﴿9﴾ وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَّهِينٍ ﴿10﴾ هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّآءٍۭ بِنَمِيمٍ ﴿11﴾ مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ ﴿12﴾ عُتُلٍّۭ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ ﴿13﴾ أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ ﴿14﴾ إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿15﴾

Tafsir of Surah Al-Qalam (Yusuf Ali: Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

نٓ ۚ وَٱلْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ ﴿1﴾

English Translation

Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, (1)

English Transliteration

Noon waalqalami wama yasturoona (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- (1)

مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍ ﴿2﴾

English Translation

You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman. (2)

English Transliteration

Ma anta biniAAmati rabbika bimajnoonin (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

Thou art not, by the Grace of thy Lord, mad or possessed. (2)

وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍ ﴿3﴾

English Translation

And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted. (3)

English Transliteration

Wainna laka laajran ghayra mamnoonin (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

Nay, verily for thee is a Reward unfailing: (3)

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ ﴿4﴾

English Translation

And indeed, you are of a great moral character. (4)

English Transliteration

Wainnaka laAAala khuluqin AAatheemin (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

And thou (standest) on an exalted standard of character. (4)

فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ ﴿5﴾

English Translation

So you will see and they will see (5)

English Transliteration

Fasatubsiru wayubsiroona (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

Soon wilt thou see, and they will see, (5)

بِأَييِّكُمُ ٱلْمَفْتُونُ ﴿6﴾

English Translation

Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil]. (6)

English Transliteration

Biayyikumu almaftoonu (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6)

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ ﴿7﴾

English Translation

Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. (7)

English Transliteration

Inna rabbaka huwa aAAlamu biman dalla AAan sabeelihi wahuwa aAAlamu bialmuhtadeena (7)

Tafsir of Verse 7

Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. (7)

فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ﴿8﴾

English Translation

Then do not obey the deniers. (8)

English Transliteration

Fala tutiAAi almukaththibeena (8)

Tafsir of Verse 8

So hearken not to those who deny (the Truth). (8)

وَدُّوا۟ لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ ﴿9﴾

English Translation

They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you]. (9)

English Transliteration

Waddoo law tudhinu fayudhinoona (9)

Tafsir of Verse 9

Their desire is that thou shouldst be pliant: so would they be pliant. (9)

وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَّهِينٍ ﴿10﴾

English Translation

And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer (10)

English Transliteration

Wala tutiAA kulla hallafin maheenin (10)

Tafsir of Verse 10

Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (10)

هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّآءٍۭ بِنَمِيمٍ ﴿11﴾

English Translation

[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip - (11)

English Transliteration

Hammazin mashshain binameemin (11)

Tafsir of Verse 11

A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11)

مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ ﴿12﴾

English Translation

A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful, (12)

English Transliteration

MannaAAin lilkhayri muAAtadin atheemin (12)

Tafsir of Verse 12

(Habitually) hindering (all) good, transgressing beyond bounds, deep in sin, (12)

عُتُلٍّۭ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ ﴿13﴾

English Translation

Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender. (13)

English Transliteration

AAutullin baAAda thalika zaneemin (13)

Tafsir of Verse 13

Violent (and cruel),- with all that, base-born,- (13)

أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ ﴿14﴾

English Translation

Because he is a possessor of wealth and children, (14)

English Transliteration

An kana tha malin wabaneena (14)

Tafsir of Verse 14

Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. (14)

إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿15﴾

English Translation

When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples." (15)

English Transliteration

Itha tutla AAalayhi ayatuna qala asateeru alawwaleena (15)

Tafsir of Verse 15

When to him are rehearsed Our Signs, "Tales of the ancients", he cries! (15)
