O you who wraps himself [in clothing],

Ya ayyuha almuzzammilu

O thou enwrapped in thy robes,

English Translation

Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little -

English Transliteration

Qumi allayla illa qaleelan

keep vigil the night, except a little

English Translation

Half of it - or subtract from it a little

English Transliteration

Nisfahu awi onqus minhu qaleelan

(a half of it, or diminish a little,

English Translation

Or add to it, and recite the Qur\'an with measured recitation.

English Transliteration

Aw zid AAalayhi warattili alqurana tarteelan

or add a little), and chant the Koran very distinctly;

English Translation

Indeed, We will cast upon you a heavy word.

English Transliteration

Inna sanulqee AAalayka qawlan thaqeelan

Behold, We shall cast upon thee a weighty word;

English Translation

Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words.

English Transliteration

Inna nashiata allayli hiya ashaddu watan waaqwamu qeelan

surely the first part of the night is heavier in tread, more upright in speech,

English Translation

Indeed, for you by day is prolonged occupation.

English Transliteration

Inna laka fee alnnahari sabhan taweelan

surely in the day thou hast long business.

English Translation

And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with [complete] devotion.

English Transliteration

Waothkuri isma rabbika watabattal ilayhi tabteelan

And remember the Name of thy Lord, and devote thyself unto Him very devoutly.

English Translation

[He is] the Lord of the East and the West; there is no deity except Him, so take Him as Disposer of [your] affairs.

English Transliteration

Rabbu almashriqi waalmaghribi la ilaha illa huwa faittakhithhu wakeelan

Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He; so take Him for a Guardian.

English Translation

And be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance.

English Transliteration

Waisbir AAala ma yaqooloona waohjurhum hajran jameelan

And bear thou patiently what they say, and forsake them graciously.

English Translation

And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little.

English Transliteration

Watharnee waalmukaththibeena olee alnnaAAmati wamahhilhum qaleelan

Leave Me to those who cry lies, those prosperous ones, and respite them a little,

English Translation

Indeed, with Us [for them] are shackles and burning fire

English Transliteration

Inna ladayna ankalan wajaheeman

for with Us there are fetters, and a furnace,

English Translation

And food that chokes and a painful punishment -

English Transliteration

WataAAaman tha ghussatin waAAathaban aleeman

and food that chokes, and a painful chastisement,

English Translation

On the Day the earth and the mountains will convulse and the mountains will become a heap of sand pouring down.

English Transliteration

Yawma tarjufu alardu waaljibalu wakanati aljibalu katheeban maheelan

upon the day when the earth and the mountains shall quake and the mountains become a slipping heap of sand.

English Translation

Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness upon you just as We sent to Pharaoh a messenger.

English Transliteration

Inna arsalna ilaykum rasoolan shahidan AAalaykum kama arsalna ila firAAawna rasoolan

Surely We have sent unto you a Messenger as a witness over you, even as We sent to Pharaoh a Messenger,

English Translation

But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure.

English Transliteration

FaAAasa firAAawnu alrrasoola faakhathnahu akhthan wabeelan

but Pharaoh rebelled against the Messenger, so We seized him remorselessly.

English Translation

Then how can you fear, if you disbelieve, a Day that will make the children white- haired?

English Transliteration

Fakayfa tattaqoona in kafartum yawman yajAAalu alwildana sheeban

If therefore you disbelieve, how will you guard yourselves against a day that shall make the children grey-headed?

English Translation

The heaven will break apart therefrom; ever is His promise fulfilled.

English Transliteration

Alssamao munfatirun bihi kana waAAduhu mafAAoolan

Whereby heaven shall be split, and its promise shall be performed.

English Translation

Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way.

English Transliteration

Inna hathihi tathkiratun faman shaa ittakhatha ila rabbihi sabeelan

Surely this is a Reminder; so let him who will take unto his Lord a way.
