يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ ﴿1﴾ قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ ﴿2﴾ وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ ﴿3﴾ وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ ﴿4﴾ وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ ﴿5﴾ وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ ﴿6﴾ وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ ﴿7﴾ فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ ﴿8﴾ فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ ﴿9﴾ عَلَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ ﴿10﴾ ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا ﴿11﴾ وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا ﴿12﴾ وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا ﴿13﴾ وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًا ﴿14﴾ ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ ﴿15﴾ كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِءَايَٰتِنَا عَنِيدًا ﴿16﴾ سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا ﴿17﴾

Tafsir of Surah Al-Muddaththir (Arberry: A. J. Arberry)

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ ﴿1﴾

English Translation

O you who covers himself [with a garment], (1)

English Transliteration

Ya ayyuha almuddaththiru (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

O thou shrouded in thy mantle, (1)

قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ ﴿2﴾

English Translation

Arise and warn (2)

English Transliteration

Qum faanthir (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

arise, and warn! (2)

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ ﴿3﴾

English Translation

And your Lord glorify (3)

English Transliteration

Warabbaka fakabbir (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

Thy Lord magnify (3)

وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ ﴿4﴾

English Translation

And your clothing purify (4)

English Transliteration

Wathiyabaka fatahhir (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

thy robes purify (4)

وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ ﴿5﴾

English Translation

And uncleanliness avoid (5)

Waalrrujza faohjur (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

and defilement flee! (5)

وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ ﴿6﴾

English Translation

And do not confer favor to acquire more (6)

English Transliteration

Wala tamnun tastakthiru (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

Give not, thinking to gain greater (6)

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ ﴿7﴾

English Translation

But for your Lord be patient. (7)

English Transliteration

Walirabbika faisbir (7)

Tafsir of Verse 7

and be patient unto thy Lord. (7)

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ ﴿8﴾

English Translation

And when the trumpet is blown, (8)

English Transliteration

Faitha nuqira fee alnnaqoori (8)

For when the Trump is sounded (8)

فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ ﴿9﴾

English Translation

That Day will be a difficult day (9)

English Transliteration

Fathalika yawmaithin yawmun AAaseerun (9)

that day will be a harsh day, (9)

عَلَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ ﴿10﴾

English Translation

For the disbelievers - not easy. (10)

English Transliteration

AAala alkafireena ghayru yaseerin (10)

Tafsir of Verse 10

for the unbelievers not easy. (10)

ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا ﴿11﴾

English Translation

Leave Me with the one I created alone (11)

English Transliteration

Tharnee waman khalaqtu waheedan (11)

Tafsir of Verse 11

Leave Me with him whom I created alone, (11)

وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا ﴿12﴾

English Translation

And to whom I granted extensive wealth (12)

English Transliteration

WajaAAaltu lahu malan mamdoodan (12)

and appointed for him ample wealth (12)

وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا ﴿13﴾

English Translation

And children present [with him] (13)

English Transliteration

Wabaneena shuhoodan (13)

Tafsir of Verse 13

and sons standing before him, (13)

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًا ﴿14﴾

English Translation

And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. (14)

English Transliteration

Wamahhadtu lahu tamheedan (14)

Tafsir of Verse 14

and made all things smooth for him; (14)

ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ ﴿15﴾

English Translation

Then he desires that I should add more. (15)

English Transliteration

Thumma yatmaAAu an azeeda (15)

Tafsir of Verse 15

then he is eager that I should do more. (15)

كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِءَايَٰتِنَا عَنِيدًا ﴿16﴾

English Translation

No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. (16)

English Transliteration

Kalla innahu kana liayatina AAaneedan (16)

Tafsir of Verse 16

Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; (16)

سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا ﴿17﴾

English Translation

I will cover him with arduous torment. (17)

English Transliteration

Saorhiquhu saAAoodan (17)

Tafsir of Verse 17

and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. (17)
