قُلْ أُوحِىَ إِلَىَّ أَنَّهُ ٱسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌ مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ فَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْءَانًا عَجَبًا ﴿1﴾ يَهْدِىٓ إِلَى ٱلرُّشْدِ فَـَٔامَنَّا بِهِۦ ۖ وَلَن نُّشْرِكَ بِرَبِّنَآ أَحَدًا ﴿2﴾ وَأَنَّهُۥ تَعَٰلَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا ٱتَّخَذَ صَٰحِبَةً وَلَا وَلَدًا ﴿3﴾ وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَفِيهُنَا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ شَطَطًا ﴿4﴾ وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن تَقُولَ ٱلْإِنسُ وَٱلْجِنُّ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا ﴿5﴾ وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِّنَ ٱلْإِنسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمْ رَهَقًا ﴿6﴾ وَأَنَّهُمْ ظَنُّوا۟ كَمَا ظَنَنتُمْ أَن لَّن يَبْعَثَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدًا ﴿7﴾ وَأَنَّا لَمَسْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ فَوَجَدْنَٰهَا مُلِئَتْ حَرَسًا شَدِيدًا وَشُهُبًا ﴿8﴾ وَأَنَّا كُنَّا نَقْعُدُ مِنْهَا مَقَٰعِدَ لِلسَّمْعِ ۖ فَمَن يَسْتَمِعِ ٱلْءَانَ يَجِدْ لَهُۥ شِهَابًا رَّصَدًا ﴿9﴾ وَأَنَّا لَا نَدْرِىٓ أَشَرٌّ أُرِيدَ بِمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَمْ أَرَادَ بِهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ رَشَدًا ﴿10﴾ وَأَنَّا مِنَّا ٱلصَّٰلِحُونَ وَمِنَّا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ كُنَّا طَرَآئِقَ قِدَدًا ﴿11﴾ وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن نُّعْجِزَ ٱللَّهَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَن نُّعْجِزَهُۥ هَرَبًا ﴿12﴾ وَأَنَّا لَمَّا سَمِعْنَا ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ ءَامَنَّا بِهِۦ ۖ فَمَن يُؤْمِنۢ بِرَبِّهِۦ فَلَا يَخَافُ بَخْسًا وَلَا رَهَقًا ﴿13﴾

Tafsir of Surah Al-Jinn (Arberry: A. J. Arberry)

قُلْ أُوحِىَ إِلَىَّ أَنَّهُ ٱسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌ مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ فَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْءَانًا عَجَبًا ﴿1﴾

English Translation

Say, [O Muhammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, \'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur\'an. (1)

English Transliteration

Qul oohiya ilayya annahu istamaAAa nafarun mina aljinni faqaloo inna samiAAna quranan AAajaban (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

Say: 'It has been revealed to me that a company of the jinn gave ear, then they said, "We have indeed heard a Koran wonderful, (1)

يَهْدِىٓ إِلَى ٱلرُّشْدِ فَـَٔامَنَّا بِهِۦ ۖ وَلَن نُّشْرِكَ بِرَبِّنَآ أَحَدًا ﴿2﴾

English Translation

It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone. (2)

English Transliteration

Yahdee ila alrrushdi faamanna bihi walan nushrika birabbina ahadan (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

guiding to rectitude. We believe in it, and we will not associate with our Lord anyone. (2)

وَأَنَّهُۥ تَعَٰلَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا ٱتَّخَذَ صَٰحِبَةً وَلَا وَلَدًا ﴿3﴾

English Translation

And [it teaches] that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son (3)

English Transliteration

Waannahu taAAala jaddu rabbina ma ittakhatha sahibatan wala waladan (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

He -- exalted be our Lord's majesty! has not taken to Himself either consort or a son. (3)

وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَفِيهُنَا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ شَطَطًا ﴿4﴾

English Translation

And that our foolish one has been saying about Allah an excessive transgression. (4)

English Transliteration

Waannahu kana yaqoolu safeehuna AAala Allahi shatatan (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

The fool among us spoke against God outrage, (4)

وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن تَقُولَ ٱلْإِنسُ وَٱلْجِنُّ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا ﴿5﴾

English Translation

And we had thought that mankind and the jinn would never speak about Allah a lie. (5)

English Transliteration

Waanna thananna an lan taqoola alinsu waaljinnu AAala Allahi kathiban (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

and we had thought that men and jinn would never speak against God a lie. (5)

وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِّنَ ٱلْإِنسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمْ رَهَقًا ﴿6﴾

English Translation

And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden. (6)

English Transliteration

Waannahu kana rijalun mina alinsi yaAAoothoona birijalin mina aljinni fazadoohum rahaqan (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

But there were certain men of mankind who would take refuge with certain men of the jinn, and they increased them in vileness, (6)

وَأَنَّهُمْ ظَنُّوا۟ كَمَا ظَنَنتُمْ أَن لَّن يَبْعَثَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدًا ﴿7﴾

English Translation

And they had thought, as you thought, that Allah would never send anyone [as a messenger]. (7)

English Transliteration

Waannahum thannoo kama thanantum an lan yabAAatha Allahu ahadan (7)

Tafsir of Verse 7

and they thought, even as you also thought, that God would never raise up anyone. (7)

وَأَنَّا لَمَسْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ فَوَجَدْنَٰهَا مُلِئَتْ حَرَسًا شَدِيدًا وَشُهُبًا ﴿8﴾

English Translation

And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames. (8)

English Transliteration

Waanna lamasna alssamaa fawajadnaha muliat harasan shadeedan washuhuban (8)

Tafsir of Verse 8

And we stretched towards heaven, but we found it filled with terrible guards and meteors. (8)

وَأَنَّا كُنَّا نَقْعُدُ مِنْهَا مَقَٰعِدَ لِلسَّمْعِ ۖ فَمَن يَسْتَمِعِ ٱلْءَانَ يَجِدْ لَهُۥ شِهَابًا رَّصَدًا ﴿9﴾

English Translation

And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing, but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him. (9)

English Transliteration

Waanna kunna naqAAudu minha maqaAAida lilssamAAi faman yastamiAAi alana yajid lahu shihaban rasadan (9)

Tafsir of Verse 9

We would sit there on seats to hear; but any listening now finds a meteor in wait for him. (9)

وَأَنَّا لَا نَدْرِىٓ أَشَرٌّ أُرِيدَ بِمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَمْ أَرَادَ بِهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ رَشَدًا ﴿10﴾

English Translation

And we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course. (10)

English Transliteration

Waanna la nadree asharrun oreeda biman fee alardi am arada bihim rabbuhum rashadan (10)

Tafsir of Verse 10

And so we know not whether evil is intended for those in the earth, or whether their Lord intends for them rectitude. (10)

وَأَنَّا مِنَّا ٱلصَّٰلِحُونَ وَمِنَّا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ كُنَّا طَرَآئِقَ قِدَدًا ﴿11﴾

English Translation

And among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways. (11)

English Transliteration

Waanna minna alssalihoona waminna doona thalika kunna taraiqa qidadan (11)

Tafsir of Verse 11

And some of us are the righteous, and some of us are otherwise; we are sects differing. (11)

وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن نُّعْجِزَ ٱللَّهَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَن نُّعْجِزَهُۥ هَرَبًا ﴿12﴾

English Translation

And we have become certain that we will never cause failure to Allah upon earth, nor can we escape Him by flight. (12)

English Transliteration

Wanna thananna an lan nuAAjiza Allaha fee alardi walan nuAAjizahu haraban (12)

Tafsir of Verse 12

Indeed, we thought that we should never be able to frustrate God in the earth, neither be able to frustrate Him by flight. (12)

وَأَنَّا لَمَّا سَمِعْنَا ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ ءَامَنَّا بِهِۦ ۖ فَمَن يُؤْمِنۢ بِرَبِّهِۦ فَلَا يَخَافُ بَخْسًا وَلَا رَهَقًا ﴿13﴾

English Translation

And when we heard the guidance, we believed in it. And whoever believes in his Lord will not fear deprivation or burden. (13)

English Transliteration

Waanna lamma samiAAna alhuda amanna bihi faman yumin birabbihi fala yakhafu bakhsan wala rahaqan (13)

Tafsir of Verse 13

When we heard the guidance, we believed in it; and whosoever believes in his Lord, he shall fear neither paltriness nor vileness. (13)
