And present to them an example: the people of the city, when the messengers came to it - (13)

Wai d rib lahum mathalan as ha ba alqaryati ith ja aha almursaloona (13)

Strike for them a similitude -- the inhabitants of the city, when the Envoys came to it; (13)
English Translation
When We sent to them two but they denied them, so We strengthened them with a third, and they said, "Indeed, we are messengers to you." (14)
English Transliteration
Ith arsalna ilayhimu ithnayni fakathth aboohuma faAAazzazna bitha lithin faqa loo inna ilaykum mursaloona (14)

when We sent unto them two men, but they cried them lies, so We sent a third as reinforcement. They said, 'We are assuredly Envoys unto you. (14)
English Translation
They said, "You are not but human beings like us, and the Most Merciful has not revealed a thing. You are only telling lies." (15)
English Transliteration
Qa loo ma antum illa basharun mithluna wama anzala al rrah ma nu min shayin in antum illa takth iboona (15)

They said, 'You are naught but mortals like us; the All-merciful has not sent down anything. You are speaking only lies.' (15)
English Translation
They said, "Our Lord knows that we are messengers to you, (16)

Qa loo rabbuna yaAAlamu inna ilaykum lamursaloona (16)

They said, 'Our Lord knows we are Envoys unto you; (16)
English Translation
And we are not responsible except for clear notification." (17)

Wama AAalayna illa albala ghu almubeenu (17)

and it is only for us to deliver the Manifest Message.' (17)
English Translation
They said, "Indeed, we consider you a bad omen. If you do not desist, we will surely stone you, and there will surely touch you, from us, a painful punishment." (18)
English Transliteration
Qa loo inna tat ayyarna bikum lain lam tantahoo lanarjumannakum walayamassannakum minna AAatha bun aleemun (18)

They said, 'We augur ill of you. If you give not over, we will stone you and there shall visit you from us a painful chastisement.' (18)
English Translation
They said, "Your omen is with yourselves. Is it because you were reminded? Rather, you are a transgressing people." (19)
English Transliteration
Qa loo ta irukum maAAakum ain th ukkirtum bal antum qawmun musrifoona (19)

They said, 'Your augury is with you; if you are reminded? But you are a prodigal people.' (19)
English Translation
And there came from the farthest end of the city a man, running. He said, "O my people, follow the messengers. (20)

Waja a min aqsa almadeenati rajulun yasAAa qa la ya qawmi ittabiAAoo almursaleena (20)

Then came a man from the furthest part of the city, running; he said, 'My people, follow the Envoys! (20)
English Translation
Follow those who do not ask of you [any] payment, and they are [rightly] guided. (21)

IttabiAAoo man la yasalukum ajran wahum muhtadoona (21)

Follow such as ask no wage of you, that are right-guided. (21)
English Translation
And why should I not worship He who created me and to whom you will be returned? (22)

Wama liya la aAAbudu allath ee fat aranee wailayhi turjaAAoona (22)

And why should I not serve Him who originated me, and unto whom you shall be returned? (22)
English Translation
Should I take other than Him [false] deities [while], if the Most Merciful intends for me some adversity, their intercession will not avail me at all, nor can they save me? (23)

Aattakhith u min doonihi a lihatan in yuridni al rrah ma nu bid urrin la tughni AAannee shafa AAatuhum shayan wala yunqith ooni (23)

What, shall I take, apart from Him, gods whose intercession, if the All-merciful desires affliction for me, shall not avail me anything, and who will never deliver me? (23)

Indeed, I would then be in manifest error. (24)

Qeela odkhuli aljannata qa la ya layta qawmee yaAAlamoona (26)

Of how my Lord has forgiven me and placed me among the honored." (27)
