وَٱلصَّٰٓفَّٰتِ صَفًّا ﴿1﴾ فَٱلزَّٰجِرَٰتِ زَجْرًا ﴿2﴾ فَٱلتَّٰلِيَٰتِ ذِكْرًا ﴿3﴾ إِنَّ إِلَٰهَكُمْ لَوَٰحِدٌ ﴿4﴾ رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ ٱلْمَشَٰرِقِ ﴿5﴾ إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِزِينَةٍ ٱلْكَوَاكِبِ ﴿6﴾ وَحِفْظًا مِّن كُلِّ شَيْطَٰنٍ مَّارِدٍ ﴿7﴾ لَّا يَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى ٱلْمَلَإِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ وَيُقْذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبٍ ﴿8﴾ دُحُورًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ وَاصِبٌ ﴿9﴾ إِلَّا مَنْ خَطِفَ ٱلْخَطْفَةَ فَأَتْبَعَهُۥ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ ﴿10﴾ فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْ أَهُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَم مَّنْ خَلَقْنَآ ۚ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَٰهُم مِّن طِينٍ لَّازِبٍۭ ﴿11﴾ بَلْ عَجِبْتَ وَيَسْخَرُونَ ﴿12﴾ وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ لَا يَذْكُرُونَ ﴿13﴾ وَإِذَا رَأَوْا۟ ءَايَةً يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ ﴿14﴾ وَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ ﴿15﴾ أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ ﴿16﴾ أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ ﴿17﴾ قُلْ نَعَمْ وَأَنتُمْ دَٰخِرُونَ ﴿18﴾ فَإِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجْرَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ فَإِذَا هُمْ يَنظُرُونَ ﴿19﴾ وَقَالُوا۟ يَٰوَيْلَنَا هَٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلدِّينِ ﴿20﴾ هَٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلْفَصْلِ ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ﴿21﴾ ۞ ٱحْشُرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ وَأَزْوَٰجَهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْبُدُونَ ﴿22﴾ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَٱهْدُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ ﴿23﴾ وَقِفُوهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسْـُٔولُونَ ﴿24﴾

Tafsir of Surah As-Saaffaat (Arberry: A. J. Arberry)

وَٱلصَّٰٓفَّٰتِ صَفًّا ﴿1﴾

English Translation

By those [angels] lined up in rows (1)

English Transliteration

Waalssaffati saffan (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

By the rangers ranging (1)

فَٱلزَّٰجِرَٰتِ زَجْرًا ﴿2﴾

English Translation

And those who drive [the clouds] (2)

English Transliteration

Faalzzajirati zajran (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

and the scarers scaring (2)

فَٱلتَّٰلِيَٰتِ ذِكْرًا ﴿3﴾

English Translation

And those who recite the message, (3)

English Transliteration

Faalttaliyati thikran (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

and the reciters of a Remembrance, (3)

إِنَّ إِلَٰهَكُمْ لَوَٰحِدٌ ﴿4﴾

English Translation

Indeed, your God is One, (4)

English Transliteration

Inna ilahakum lawahidun (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

surely your God is One, (4)

رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ ٱلْمَشَٰرِقِ ﴿5﴾

English Translation

Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them and Lord of the sunrises. (5)

English Transliteration

Rabbu alssamawati waalardi wama baynahuma warabbu almashariqi (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

Lord of the heavens and the earth, and of what between them is Lord of the Easts. (5)

إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِزِينَةٍ ٱلْكَوَاكِبِ ﴿6﴾

English Translation

Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars (6)

English Transliteration

Inna zayyanna alssamaa alddunya bizeenatin alkawakibi (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

We have adorned the lower heaven with the adornment of the stars (6)

وَحِفْظًا مِّن كُلِّ شَيْطَٰنٍ مَّارِدٍ ﴿7﴾

English Translation

And as protection against every rebellious devil (7)

English Transliteration

Wahifthan min kulli shaytanin maridin (7)

Tafsir of Verse 7

and to preserve against every rebel Satan; (7)

لَّا يَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى ٱلْمَلَإِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ وَيُقْذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبٍ ﴿8﴾

English Translation

[So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side, (8)

English Transliteration

La yassammaAAoona ila almalai alaAAla wayuqthafoona min kulli janibin (8)

Tafsir of Verse 8

they listen not to the High Council, for they are pelted from every side, (8)

دُحُورًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ وَاصِبٌ ﴿9﴾

English Translation

Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment, (9)

English Transliteration

Duhooran walahum AAathabun wasibun (9)

Tafsir of Verse 9

rejected, and theirs is an everlasting chastisement, (9)

إِلَّا مَنْ خَطِفَ ٱلْخَطْفَةَ فَأَتْبَعَهُۥ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ ﴿10﴾

English Translation

Except one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness]. (10)

English Transliteration

Illa man khatifa alkhatfata faatbaAAahu shihabun thaqibun (10)

Tafsir of Verse 10

except such as snatches a fragment, and he is pursued by a piercing flame. (10)

فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْ أَهُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَم مَّنْ خَلَقْنَآ ۚ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَٰهُم مِّن طِينٍ لَّازِبٍۭ ﴿11﴾

English Translation

Then inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created men from sticky clay. (11)

English Transliteration

Faistaftihim ahum ashaddu khalqan am man khalaqna inna khalaqnahum min teenin lazibin (11)

Tafsir of Verse 11

So ask them for a pronouncement -- Are they stronger in constitution, or those We created? We created them of clinging clay. (11)

بَلْ عَجِبْتَ وَيَسْخَرُونَ ﴿12﴾

English Translation

But you wonder, while they mock, (12)

English Transliteration

Bal AAajibta wayaskharoona (12)

Tafsir of Verse 12

Nay, thou marvellest; and they scoff (12)

وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ لَا يَذْكُرُونَ ﴿13﴾

English Translation

And when they are reminded, they remember not. (13)

English Transliteration

Waitha thukkiroo la yathkuroona (13)

Tafsir of Verse 13

and, when reminded, do not remember (13)

وَإِذَا رَأَوْا۟ ءَايَةً يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ ﴿14﴾

English Translation

And when they see a sign, they ridicule (14)

English Transliteration

Waitha raaw ayatan yastaskhiroona (14)

Tafsir of Verse 14

and, when they see a sign, would scoff; (14)

وَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ ﴿15﴾

English Translation

And say, "This is not but obvious magic. (15)

English Transliteration

Waqaloo in hatha illa sihrun mubeenun (15)

Tafsir of Verse 15

and they say, 'This is nothing but manifest sorcery. (15)

أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ ﴿16﴾

English Translation

When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? (16)

English Transliteration

Aitha mitna wakunna turaban waAAithaman ainna lamabAAoothoona (16)

Tafsir of Verse 16

What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? (16)

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ ﴿17﴾

English Translation

And our forefathers [as well]?" (17)

English Transliteration

Awaabaona alawwaloona (17)

Tafsir of Verse 17

What, and our fathers, the ancients?' (17)

قُلْ نَعَمْ وَأَنتُمْ دَٰخِرُونَ ﴿18﴾

English Translation

Say, "Yes, and you will be [rendered] contemptible." (18)

English Transliteration

Qul naAAam waantum dakhiroona (18)

Tafsir of Verse 18

Say: 'Yes, and in all lowliness.' (18)

فَإِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجْرَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ فَإِذَا هُمْ يَنظُرُونَ ﴿19﴾

English Translation

It will be only one shout, and at once they will be observing. (19)

English Transliteration

Fainnama hiya zajratun wahidatun faitha hum yanthuroona (19)

Tafsir of Verse 19

For it is only a single scaring, then behold, they are watching (19)

وَقَالُوا۟ يَٰوَيْلَنَا هَٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلدِّينِ ﴿20﴾

English Translation

They will say, "O woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense." (20)

English Transliteration

Waqaloo ya waylana hatha yawmu alddeeni (20)

Tafsir of Verse 20

and they say, 'Woe, alas for us! This is the Day of Doom.' (20)

هَٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلْفَصْلِ ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ﴿21﴾

English Translation

[They will be told], "This is the Day of Judgement which you used to deny." (21)

English Transliteration

Hatha yawmu alfasli allathee kuntum bihi tukaththiboona (21)

Tafsir of Verse 21

'This is the Day of Decision, even that you cried lies to. (21)

۞ ٱحْشُرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ وَأَزْوَٰجَهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْبُدُونَ ﴿22﴾

English Translation

[The angels will be ordered], "Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds, and what they used to worship (22)

English Transliteration

Ohshuroo allatheena thalamoo waazwajahum wama kanoo yaAAbudoona (22)

Tafsir of Verse 22

Muster those who did evil, their wives, and that they were serving, (22)

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَٱهْدُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ ﴿23﴾

English Translation

Other than Allah, and guide them to the path of Hellfire (23)

English Transliteration

Min dooni Allahi faihdoohum ila sirati aljaheemi (23)

Tafsir of Verse 23

apart from God, and guide them unto the path of Hell! (23)

وَقِفُوهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسْـُٔولُونَ ﴿24﴾

English Translation

And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned." (24)

English Transliteration

Waqifoohum innahum masooloona (24)

And halt them, to be questioned: (24)
