إِذَا ٱلشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ ﴿1﴾ وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتْ ﴿2﴾ وَإِذَا ٱلْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ ﴿3﴾ وَإِذَا ٱلْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ ﴿4﴾ وَإِذَا ٱلْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ ﴿5﴾ وَإِذَا ٱلْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ ﴿6﴾ وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ ﴿7﴾ وَإِذَا ٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتْ ﴿8﴾ بِأَىِّ ذَنۢبٍ قُتِلَتْ ﴿9﴾ وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ ﴿10﴾ وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتْ ﴿11﴾ وَإِذَا ٱلْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ ﴿12﴾ وَإِذَا ٱلْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ ﴿13﴾ عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّآ أَحْضَرَتْ ﴿14﴾ فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلْخُنَّسِ ﴿15﴾ ٱلْجَوَارِ ٱلْكُنَّسِ ﴿16﴾ وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ ﴿17﴾ وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ ﴿18﴾ إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ ﴿19﴾ ذِى قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِى ٱلْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍ ﴿20﴾ مُّطَاعٍ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ ﴿21﴾ وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ ﴿22﴾ وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْمُبِينِ ﴿23﴾ وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍ ﴿24﴾ وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَٰنٍ رَّجِيمٍ ﴿25﴾ فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ ﴿26﴾ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ ﴿27﴾ لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَسْتَقِيمَ ﴿28﴾ وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ ﴿29﴾

Tafsir of Surah At-Takwir (Arberry: A. J. Arberry)

إِذَا ٱلشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ ﴿1﴾

English Translation

When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness] (1)

English Transliteration

Itha alshshamsu kuwwirat (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

When the sun shall be darkened, (1)

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتْ ﴿2﴾

English Translation

And when the stars fall, dispersing, (2)

English Transliteration

Waitha alnnujoomu inkadarat (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

when the stars shall be thrown down, (2)

وَإِذَا ٱلْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ ﴿3﴾

English Translation

And when the mountains are removed (3)

English Transliteration

Waitha aljibalu suyyirat (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

when the mountains shall be set moving, (3)

وَإِذَا ٱلْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ ﴿4﴾

English Translation

And when full-term she-camels are neglected (4)

Waitha alAAisharu AAuttilat (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

when the pregnant camels shall be neglected, (4)

وَإِذَا ٱلْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ ﴿5﴾

English Translation

And when the wild beasts are gathered (5)

English Transliteration

Waitha alwuhooshu hushirat (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

when the savage beasts shall be mustered, (5)

وَإِذَا ٱلْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ ﴿6﴾

English Translation

And when the seas are filled with flame (6)

English Transliteration

Waitha albiharu sujjirat (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

when the seas shall be set boiling, (6)

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ ﴿7﴾

English Translation

And when the souls are paired (7)

English Transliteration

Waitha alnnufoosu zuwwijat (7)

when the souls shall be coupled, (7)

وَإِذَا ٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتْ ﴿8﴾

English Translation

And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked (8)

English Transliteration

Waitha almawoodatu suilat (8)

Tafsir of Verse 8

when the buried infant shall be asked (8)

بِأَىِّ ذَنۢبٍ قُتِلَتْ ﴿9﴾

English Translation

For what sin she was killed (9)

English Transliteration

Biayyi thanbin qutilat (9)

Tafsir of Verse 9

for what sin she was slain, (9)

وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ ﴿10﴾

English Translation

And when the pages are made public (10)

Waitha alssuhufu nushirat (10)

Tafsir of Verse 10

when the scrolls shall be unrolled, (10)

وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتْ ﴿11﴾

English Translation

And when the sky is stripped away (11)

English Transliteration

Waitha alssamao kushitat (11)

Tafsir of Verse 11

when heaven shall be stripped off; (11)

وَإِذَا ٱلْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ ﴿12﴾

English Translation

And when Hellfire is set ablaze (12)

English Transliteration

Waitha aljaheemu suAAAAirat (12)

Tafsir of Verse 12

when Hell shall be set blazing, (12)

وَإِذَا ٱلْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ ﴿13﴾

English Translation

And when Paradise is brought near, (13)

English Transliteration

Waitha aljannatu ozlifat (13)

Tafsir of Verse 13

when Paradise shall be brought nigh, (13)

عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّآ أَحْضَرَتْ ﴿14﴾

English Translation

A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it]. (14)

English Transliteration

AAalimat nafsun ma ahdarat (14)

Tafsir of Verse 14

then shall a soul know what it has produced. (14)

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلْخُنَّسِ ﴿15﴾

English Translation

So I swear by the retreating stars - (15)

English Transliteration

Fala oqsimu bialkhunnasi (15)

Tafsir of Verse 15

No! I swear by the slinkers, (15)

ٱلْجَوَارِ ٱلْكُنَّسِ ﴿16﴾

English Translation

Those that run [their courses] and disappear - (16)

English Transliteration

Aljawari alkunnasi (16)

Tafsir of Verse 16

the runners, the sinkers, (16)

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ ﴿17﴾

English Translation

And by the night as it closes in (17)

English Transliteration

Waallayli itha AAasAAasa (17)

Tafsir of Verse 17

by the night swarming, (17)

وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ ﴿18﴾

English Translation

And by the dawn when it breathes (18)

English Transliteration

Waalssubhi itha tanaffasa (18)

Tafsir of Verse 18

by the dawn sighing, (18)

إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ ﴿19﴾

English Translation

[That] indeed, the Qur\'an is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger (19)

English Transliteration

Innahu laqawlu rasoolin kareemin (19)

Tafsir of Verse 19

truly this is the word of a noble Messenger (19)

ذِى قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِى ٱلْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍ ﴿20﴾

English Translation

[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position], (20)

English Transliteration

Thee quwwatin AAinda thee alAAarshi makeenin (20)

Tafsir of Verse 20

having power, with the Lord of the Throne secure, (20)

مُّطَاعٍ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ ﴿21﴾

English Translation

Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy. (21)

English Transliteration

MutaAAin thamma ameenin (21)

Tafsir of Verse 21

obeyed, moreover trusty. (21)

وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ ﴿22﴾

English Translation

And your companion is not [at all] mad. (22)

English Transliteration

Wama sahibukum bimajnoonin (22)

Tafsir of Verse 22

Your companion is not possessed; (22)

وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْمُبِينِ ﴿23﴾

English Translation

And he has already seen Gabriel in the clear horizon. (23)

English Transliteration

Walaqad raahu bialofuqi almubeeni (23)

Tafsir of Verse 23

he truly saw him on the clear horizon; (23)

وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍ ﴿24﴾

English Translation

And Muhammad is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen. (24)

English Transliteration

Wama huwa AAala alghaybi bidaneenin (24)

Tafsir of Verse 24

he is not niggardly of the Unseen. (24)

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَٰنٍ رَّجِيمٍ ﴿25﴾

English Translation

And the Qur\'an is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens]. (25)

English Transliteration

Wama huwa biqawli shaytanin rajeemin (25)

Tafsir of Verse 25

And it is not the word of an accursed Satan; (25)

فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ ﴿26﴾

English Translation

So where are you going? (26)

English Transliteration

Faayna tathhaboona (26)

Tafsir of Verse 26

where then are you going? (26)

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ ﴿27﴾

English Translation

It is not except a reminder to the worlds (27)

English Transliteration

In huwa illa thikrun lilAAalameena (27)

Tafsir of Verse 27

It is naught but a Reminder unto all beings, (27)

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَسْتَقِيمَ ﴿28﴾

English Translation

For whoever wills among you to take a right course. (28)

English Transliteration

Liman shaa minkum an yastaqeema (28)

Tafsir of Verse 28

for whosoever of you who would go straight; (28)

وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ ﴿29﴾

English Translation

And you do not will except that Allah wills - Lord of the worlds. (29)

English Transliteration

Wama tashaoona illa an yashaa Allahu rabbu alAAalameena (29)

Tafsir of Verse 29

but will you shall not, unless God wills, the Lord of all Being. (29)
