لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ ﴿1﴾ وَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلنَّفْسِ ٱللَّوَّامَةِ ﴿2﴾ أَيَحْسَبُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ أَلَّن نَّجْمَعَ عِظَامَهُۥ ﴿3﴾ بَلَىٰ قَٰدِرِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّسَوِّىَ بَنَانَهُۥ ﴿4﴾ بَلْ يُرِيدُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ لِيَفْجُرَ أَمَامَهُۥ ﴿5﴾ يَسْـَٔلُ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ ﴿6﴾ فَإِذَا بَرِقَ ٱلْبَصَرُ ﴿7﴾ وَخَسَفَ ٱلْقَمَرُ ﴿8﴾ وَجُمِعَ ٱلشَّمْسُ وَٱلْقَمَرُ ﴿9﴾ يَقُولُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ ٱلْمَفَرُّ ﴿10﴾ كَلَّا لَا وَزَرَ ﴿11﴾ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ ٱلْمُسْتَقَرُّ ﴿12﴾ يُنَبَّؤُا۟ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَأَخَّرَ ﴿13﴾ بَلِ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِۦ بَصِيرَةٌ ﴿14﴾ وَلَوْ أَلْقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُۥ ﴿15﴾ لَا تُحَرِّكْ بِهِۦ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهِۦٓ ﴿16﴾ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهُۥ وَقُرْءَانَهُۥ ﴿17﴾ فَإِذَا قَرَأْنَٰهُ فَٱتَّبِعْ قُرْءَانَهُۥ ﴿18﴾ ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهُۥ ﴿19﴾

Tafsir of Surah Al-Qiyaama (Yusuf Ali: Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ ﴿1﴾

English Translation

I swear by the Day of Resurrection (1)

English Transliteration

La oqsimu biyawmi alqiyamati (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

I do call to witness the Resurrection Day; (1)

وَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلنَّفْسِ ٱللَّوَّامَةِ ﴿2﴾

English Translation

And I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection]. (2)

English Transliteration

Wala oqsimu bialnnafsi allawwamati (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

And I do call to witness the self-reproaching spirit: (Eschew Evil). (2)

أَيَحْسَبُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ أَلَّن نَّجْمَعَ عِظَامَهُۥ ﴿3﴾

English Translation

Does man think that We will not assemble his bones? (3)

English Transliteration

Ayahsabu alinsanu allan najmaAAa AAithamahu (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

Does man think that We cannot assemble his bones? (3)

بَلَىٰ قَٰدِرِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّسَوِّىَ بَنَانَهُۥ ﴿4﴾

English Translation

Yes. [We are] Able [even] to proportion his fingertips. (4)

English Transliteration

Bala qadireena AAala an nusawwiya bananahu (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

Nay, We are able to put together in perfect order the very tips of his fingers. (4)

بَلْ يُرِيدُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ لِيَفْجُرَ أَمَامَهُۥ ﴿5﴾

English Translation

But man desires to continue in sin. (5)

English Transliteration

Bal yureedu alinsanu liyafjura amamahu (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

But man wishes to do wrong (even) in the time in front of him. (5)

يَسْـَٔلُ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ ﴿6﴾

English Translation

He asks, "When is the Day of Resurrection?" (6)

English Transliteration

Yasalu ayyana yawmu alqiyamati (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

He questions: "When is the Day of Resurrection?" (6)

فَإِذَا بَرِقَ ٱلْبَصَرُ ﴿7﴾

English Translation

So when vision is dazzled (7)

English Transliteration

Faitha bariqa albasaru (7)

Tafsir of Verse 7

At length, when the sight is dazed, (7)

وَخَسَفَ ٱلْقَمَرُ ﴿8﴾

English Translation

And the moon darkens (8)

English Transliteration

Wakhasafa alqamaru (8)

Tafsir of Verse 8

And the moon is buried in darkness. (8)

وَجُمِعَ ٱلشَّمْسُ وَٱلْقَمَرُ ﴿9﴾

English Translation

And the sun and the moon are joined, (9)

English Transliteration

WajumiAAa alshshamsu waalqamaru (9)

Tafsir of Verse 9

And the sun and moon are joined together,- (9)

يَقُولُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ ٱلْمَفَرُّ ﴿10﴾

English Translation

Man will say on that Day, "Where is the [place of] escape?" (10)

English Transliteration

Yaqoolu alinsanu yawmaithin ayna almafarru (10)

Tafsir of Verse 10

That Day will Man say: "Where is the refuge?" (10)

كَلَّا لَا وَزَرَ ﴿11﴾

English Translation

No! There is no refuge. (11)

English Transliteration

Kalla la wazara (11)

Tafsir of Verse 11

By no means! No place of safety! (11)

إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ ٱلْمُسْتَقَرُّ ﴿12﴾

English Translation

To your Lord, that Day, is the [place of] permanence. (12)

English Transliteration

Ila rabbika yawmaithin almustaqarru (12)

Tafsir of Verse 12

Before thy Lord (alone), that Day will be the place of rest. (12)

يُنَبَّؤُا۟ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَأَخَّرَ ﴿13﴾

English Translation

Man will be informed that Day of what he sent ahead and kept back. (13)

English Transliteration

Yunabbao alinsanu yawmaithin bima qaddama waakhkhara (13)

Tafsir of Verse 13

That Day will Man be told (all) that he put forward, and all that he put back. (13)

بَلِ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِۦ بَصِيرَةٌ ﴿14﴾

English Translation

Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness, (14)

English Transliteration

Bali alinsanu AAala nafsihi baseeratun (14)

Tafsir of Verse 14

Nay, man will be evidence against himself, (14)

وَلَوْ أَلْقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُۥ ﴿15﴾

English Translation

Even if he presents his excuses. (15)

English Transliteration

Walaw alqa maAAatheerahu (15)

Tafsir of Verse 15

Even though he were to put up his excuses. (15)

لَا تُحَرِّكْ بِهِۦ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهِۦٓ ﴿16﴾

English Translation

Move not your tongue with it, [O Muhammad], to hasten with recitation of the Qur\'an. (16)

English Transliteration

La tuharrik bihi lisanaka litaAAjala bihi (16)

Tafsir of Verse 16

Move not thy tongue concerning the (Qur'an) to make haste therewith. (16)

إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهُۥ وَقُرْءَانَهُۥ ﴿17﴾

English Translation

Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation. (17)

English Transliteration

Inna AAalayna jamAAahu waquranahu (17)

Tafsir of Verse 17

It is for Us to collect it and to promulgate it: (17)

فَإِذَا قَرَأْنَٰهُ فَٱتَّبِعْ قُرْءَانَهُۥ ﴿18﴾

English Translation

So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation. (18)

English Transliteration

Faitha qaranahu faittabiAA quranahu (18)

Tafsir of Verse 18

But when We have promulgated it, follow thou its recital (as promulgated): (18)

ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهُۥ ﴿19﴾

English Translation

Then upon Us is its clarification [to you]. (19)

English Transliteration

Thumma inna AAalayna bayanahu (19)

Tafsir of Verse 19

Nay more, it is for Us to explain it (and make it clear): (19)
