تَبَّتْ يَدَآ أَبِى لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ ﴿1﴾ مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥ وَمَا كَسَبَ ﴿2﴾ سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ ﴿3﴾ وَٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ حَمَّالَةَ ٱلْحَطَبِ ﴿4﴾ فِى جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِّن مَّسَدٍۭ ﴿5﴾

Tafsir of Surah Al-Masad (Yusuf Ali: Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

تَبَّتْ يَدَآ أَبِى لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ ﴿1﴾

English Translation

May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he. (1)

English Transliteration

Tabbat yada abee lahabin watabba (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

Perish the hands of the Father of Flame! Perish he! (1)

مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥ وَمَا كَسَبَ ﴿2﴾

English Translation

His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained. (2)

English Transliteration

Ma aghna AAanhu maluhu wama kasaba (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

No profit to him from all his wealth, and all his gains! (2)

سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ ﴿3﴾

English Translation

He will [enter to] burn in a Fire of [blazing] flame (3)

English Transliteration

Sayasla naran thata lahabin (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

Burnt soon will he be in a Fire of Blazing Flame! (3)

وَٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ حَمَّالَةَ ٱلْحَطَبِ ﴿4﴾

English Translation

And his wife [as well] - the carrier of firewood. (4)

English Transliteration

Waimraatuhu hammalata alhatabi (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

His wife shall carry the (crackling) wood - As fuel!- (4)

فِى جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِّن مَّسَدٍۭ ﴿5﴾

English Translation

Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fiber. (5)

English Transliteration

Fee jeediha hablun min masadin (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

A twisted rope of palm-leaf fibre round her (own) neck! (5)
