ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ﴿1﴾ خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ ﴿2﴾ ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ ﴿3﴾ ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ ﴿4﴾ عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ ﴿5﴾ كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ لَيَطْغَىٰٓ ﴿6﴾ أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ ﴿7﴾ إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ ﴿8﴾ أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يَنْهَىٰ ﴿9﴾ عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ ﴿10﴾ أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ ﴿11﴾ أَوْ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ ﴿12﴾ أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ ﴿13﴾ أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ ﴿14﴾ كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ ﴿15﴾ نَاصِيَةٍ كَٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ ﴿16﴾ فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُۥ ﴿17﴾ سَنَدْعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ ﴿18﴾ كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَٱسْجُدْ وَٱقْتَرِب ۩ ﴿19﴾

Tafsir of Surah Al-Alaq (Arberry: A. J. Arberry)

ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ﴿1﴾

English Translation

Recite in the name of your Lord who created - (1)

English Transliteration

Iqra biismi rabbika allathee khalaqa (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

Recite: In the Name of thy Lord who created, (1)

خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ ﴿2﴾

English Translation

Created man from a clinging substance. (2)

English Transliteration

Khalaqa alinsana min AAalaqin (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

created Man of a blood-clot. (2)

ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ ﴿3﴾

English Translation

Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous - (3)

English Transliteration

Iqra warabbuka alakramu (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous, (3)

ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ ﴿4﴾

English Translation

Who taught by the pen - (4)

English Transliteration

Allathee AAallama bialqalami (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

who taught by the Pen, (4)

عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ ﴿5﴾

English Translation

Taught man that which he knew not. (5)

English Transliteration

AAallama alinsana ma lam yaAAlam (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

taught Man that he knew not. (5)

كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ لَيَطْغَىٰٓ ﴿6﴾

English Translation

No! [But] indeed, man transgresses (6)

English Transliteration

Kalla inna alinsana layatgha (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent, (6)

أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ ﴿7﴾

English Translation

Because he sees himself self-sufficient. (7)

English Transliteration

An raahu istaghna (7)

Tafsir of Verse 7

for he thinks himself self-sufficient. (7)

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ ﴿8﴾

English Translation

Indeed, to your Lord is the return. (8)

English Transliteration

Inna ila rabbika alrrujAAa (8)

Tafsir of Verse 8

Surely unto thy Lord is the Returning. (8)

أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يَنْهَىٰ ﴿9﴾

English Translation

Have you seen the one who forbids (9)

English Transliteration

Araayta allathee yanha (9)

Tafsir of Verse 9

What thinkest thou? He who forbids (9)

عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ ﴿10﴾

English Translation

A servant when he prays? (10)

English Transliteration

AAabdan itha salla (10)

Tafsir of Verse 10

a servant when he prays -- (10)

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ ﴿11﴾

English Translation

Have you seen if he is upon guidance (11)

English Transliteration

Araayta in kana AAala alhuda (11)

Tafsir of Verse 11

What thinkest thou? If he were upon guidance (11)

أَوْ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ ﴿12﴾

English Translation

Or enjoins righteousness? (12)

English Transliteration

Aw amara bialttaqwa (12)

Tafsir of Verse 12

or bade to godfearing -- (12)

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ ﴿13﴾

English Translation

Have you seen if he denies and turns away - (13)

English Transliteration

Araayta in kaththaba watawalla (13)

Tafsir of Verse 13

What thinkest thou? If he cries lies, and turns away - (13)

أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ ﴿14﴾

English Translation

Does he not know that Allah sees? (14)

English Transliteration

Alam yaAAlam bianna Allaha yara (14)

Tafsir of Verse 14

Did he not know that God sees? (14)

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ ﴿15﴾

English Translation

No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock - (15)

English Transliteration

Kalla lain lam yantahi lanasfaAAan bialnnasiyati (15)

Tafsir of Verse 15

No indeed; surely, if he gives not over, We shall seize him by the forelock, (15)

نَاصِيَةٍ كَٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ ﴿16﴾

English Translation

A lying, sinning forelock. (16)

English Transliteration

Nasiyatin kathibatin khatiatin (16)

Tafsir of Verse 16

a lying, sinful forelock. (16)

فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُۥ ﴿17﴾

English Translation

Then let him call his associates; (17)

English Transliteration

FalyadAAu nadiyahu (17)

Tafsir of Verse 17

So let him call on his concourse! (17)

سَنَدْعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ ﴿18﴾

English Translation

We will call the angels of Hell. (18)

English Transliteration

SanadAAu alzzabaniyata (18)

Tafsir of Verse 18

We shall call on the guards of Hell. (18)

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَٱسْجُدْ وَٱقْتَرِب ۩ ﴿19﴾

English Translation

No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah]. (19)

English Transliteration

Kalla la tutiAAhu waosjud waiqtarib (19)

Tafsir of Verse 19

No indeed; do thou not obey him, and bow thyself, and draw nigh. (19)
