وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ ﴿1﴾ مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ ﴿2﴾ وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ ﴿3﴾ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌ يُوحَىٰ ﴿4﴾ عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ ﴿5﴾ ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ ﴿6﴾ وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ ﴿7﴾ ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ ﴿8﴾ فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ ﴿9﴾ فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ مَآ أَوْحَىٰ ﴿10﴾ مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ ﴿11﴾ أَفَتُمَٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ ﴿12﴾ وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ ﴿13﴾ عِندَ سِدْرَةِ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ ﴿14﴾ عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ ﴿15﴾ إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ ﴿16﴾ مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ ﴿17﴾ لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ ﴿18﴾ أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱللَّٰتَ وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ ﴿19﴾ وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ ﴿20﴾ أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ ﴿21﴾ تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰٓ ﴿22﴾ إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَٰنٍ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ ﴿23﴾ أَمْ لِلْإِنسَٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ ﴿24﴾ فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْءَاخِرَةُ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ ﴿25﴾ ۞ وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍ فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ لَا تُغْنِى شَفَٰعَتُهُمْ شَيْـًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرْضَىٰٓ ﴿26﴾

Tafsir of Surah An-Najm (Yusuf Ali: Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ ﴿1﴾

English Translation

By the star when it descends, (1)

English Transliteration

Waalnnajmi itha hawa (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

By the Star when it goes down,- (1)

مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ ﴿2﴾

English Translation

Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, (2)

English Transliteration

Ma dalla sahibukum wama ghawa (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. (2)

وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ ﴿3﴾

English Translation

Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. (3)

English Transliteration

Wama yantiqu AAani alhawa (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire. (3)

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌ يُوحَىٰ ﴿4﴾

English Translation

It is not but a revelation revealed, (4)

English Transliteration

In huwa illa wahyun yooha (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: (4)

عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ ﴿5﴾

English Translation

Taught to him by one intense in strength - (5)

English Transliteration

AAallamahu shadeedu alquwa (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

He was taught by one Mighty in Power, (5)

ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ ﴿6﴾

English Translation

One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form (6)

English Transliteration

Thoo mirratin faistawa (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form); (6)

وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ ﴿7﴾

English Translation

While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. (7)

English Transliteration

Wahuwa bialofuqi alaAAla (7)

Tafsir of Verse 7

While he was in the highest part of the horizon: (7)

ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ ﴿8﴾

English Translation

Then he approached and descended (8)

English Transliteration

Thumma dana fatadalla (8)

Tafsir of Verse 8

Then he approached and came closer, (8)

فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ ﴿9﴾

English Translation

And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. (9)

English Transliteration

Fakana qaba qawsayni aw adna (9)

Tafsir of Verse 9

And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; (9)

فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ مَآ أَوْحَىٰ ﴿10﴾

English Translation

And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. (10)

English Transliteration

Faawha ila AAabdihi ma awha (10)

Tafsir of Verse 10

So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant- (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey. (10)

مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ ﴿11﴾

English Translation

The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. (11)

English Transliteration

Ma kathaba alfuadu ma raa (11)

Tafsir of Verse 11

The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. (11)

أَفَتُمَٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ ﴿12﴾

English Translation

So will you dispute with him over what he saw? (12)

English Transliteration

Afatumaroonahu AAala ma yara (12)

Tafsir of Verse 12

Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw? (12)

وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ ﴿13﴾

English Translation

And he certainly saw him in another descent (13)

English Transliteration

Walaqad raahu nazlatan okhra (13)

Tafsir of Verse 13

For indeed he saw him at a second descent, (13)

عِندَ سِدْرَةِ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ ﴿14﴾

English Translation

At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary - (14)

English Transliteration

AAinda sidrati almuntaha (14)

Tafsir of Verse 14

Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: (14)

عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ ﴿15﴾

English Translation

Near it is the Garden of Refuge - (15)

English Transliteration

AAindaha jannatu almawa (15)

Tafsir of Verse 15

Near it is the Garden of Abode. (15)

إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ ﴿16﴾

English Translation

When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]. (16)

English Transliteration

Ith yaghsha alssidrata ma yaghsha (16)

Tafsir of Verse 16

Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!) (16)

مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ ﴿17﴾

English Translation

The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. (17)

English Transliteration

Ma zagha albasaru wama tagha (17)

Tafsir of Verse 17

(His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! (17)

لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ ﴿18﴾

English Translation

He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. (18)

English Transliteration

Laqad raa min ayati rabbihi alkubra (18)

Tafsir of Verse 18

For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! (18)

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱللَّٰتَ وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ ﴿19﴾

English Translation

So have you considered al-Lat and al-\'Uzza? (19)

English Transliteration

Afaraaytumu allata waalAAuzza (19)

Tafsir of Verse 19

Have ye seen Lat. and 'Uzza, (19)

وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ ﴿20﴾

English Translation

And Manat, the third - the other one? (20)

English Transliteration

Wamanata alththalithata alokhra (20)

Tafsir of Verse 20

And another, the third (goddess), Manat? (20)

أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ ﴿21﴾

English Translation

Is the male for you and for Him the female? (21)

English Transliteration

Alakumu alththakaru walahu alontha (21)

Tafsir of Verse 21

What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female? (21)

تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰٓ ﴿22﴾

English Translation

That, then, is an unjust division. (22)

English Transliteration

Tilka ithan qismatun deeza (22)

Tafsir of Verse 22

Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! (22)

إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَٰنٍ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ ﴿23﴾

English Translation

They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance. (23)

English Transliteration

In hiya illa asmaon sammaytumooha antum waabaokum ma anzala Allahu biha min sultanin in yattabiAAoona illa alththanna wama tahwa alanfusu walaqad jaahum min rabbihimu alhuda (23)

Tafsir of Verse 23

These are nothing but names which ye have devised,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire!- Even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord! (23)

أَمْ لِلْإِنسَٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ ﴿24﴾

English Translation

Or is there for man whatever he wishes? (24)

English Transliteration

Am lilinsani ma tamanna (24)

Tafsir of Verse 24

Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? (24)

فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْءَاخِرَةُ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ ﴿25﴾

English Translation

Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. (25)

English Transliteration

Falillahi alakhiratu waaloola (25)

Tafsir of Verse 25

But it is to Allah that the End and the Beginning (of all things) belong. (25)

۞ وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍ فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ لَا تُغْنِى شَفَٰعَتُهُمْ شَيْـًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرْضَىٰٓ ﴿26﴾

English Translation

And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allah has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves. (26)

English Transliteration

Wakam min malakin fee alssamawati la tughnee shafaAAatuhum shayan illa min baAAdi an yathana Allahu liman yashao wayarda (26)

Tafsir of Verse 26

How many-so-ever be the angels in the heavens, their intercession will avail nothing except after Allah has given leave for whom He pleases and that he is acceptable to Him. (26)
