الٓر ۚ تِلْكَ ءَايَٰتُ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ وَقُرْءَانٍ مُّبِينٍ ﴿1﴾ رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ مُسْلِمِينَ ﴿2﴾ ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوا۟ وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ وَيُلْهِهِمُ ٱلْأَمَلُ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ ﴿3﴾ وَمَآ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌ مَّعْلُومٌ ﴿4﴾ مَّا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ ﴿5﴾ وَقَالُوا۟ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِى نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ ﴿6﴾ لَّوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ ﴿7﴾ مَا نُنَزِّلُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوٓا۟ إِذًا مُّنظَرِينَ ﴿8﴾ إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا ٱلذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَٰفِظُونَ ﴿9﴾ وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ فِى شِيَعِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿10﴾ وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ ﴿11﴾ كَذَٰلِكَ نَسْلُكُهُۥ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ ﴿12﴾ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ ۖ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿13﴾ وَلَوْ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَابًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَظَلُّوا۟ فِيهِ يَعْرُجُونَ ﴿14﴾ لَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَٰرُنَا بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌ مَّسْحُورُونَ ﴿15﴾

Tafsir of Surah Al-Hijr (Yusuf Ali: Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

الٓر ۚ تِلْكَ ءَايَٰتُ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ وَقُرْءَانٍ مُّبِينٍ ﴿1﴾

English Translation

Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur\'an. (1)

English Transliteration

Aliflamra tilka ayatu alkitabi waquranin mubeenin (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

A. L. R. These are the Ayats of Revelation,- of a Qur'an that makes things clear. (1)

رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ مُسْلِمِينَ ﴿2﴾

English Translation

Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims. (2)

English Transliteration

Rubama yawaddu allatheena kafaroo law kanoo muslimeena (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

Again and again will those who disbelieve, wish that they had bowed (to Allah's will) in Islam. (2)

ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوا۟ وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ وَيُلْهِهِمُ ٱلْأَمَلُ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ ﴿3﴾

English Translation

Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know. (3)

English Transliteration

Tharhum yakuloo wayatamattaAAoo wayulhihimu alamalu fasawfa yaAAlamoona (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

Leave them alone, to enjoy (the good things of this life) and to please themselves: let (false) hope amuse them: soon will knowledge (undeceive them). (3)

وَمَآ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌ مَّعْلُومٌ ﴿4﴾

English Translation

And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree. (4)

English Transliteration

Wama ahlakna min qaryatin illa walaha kitabun maAAloomun (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

Never did We destroy a population that had not a term decreed and assigned beforehand. (4)

مَّا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ ﴿5﴾

English Translation

No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter. (5)

English Transliteration

Ma tasbiqu min ommatin ajalaha wama yastakhiroona (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

Neither can a people anticipate its term, nor delay it. (5)

وَقَالُوا۟ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِى نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ ﴿6﴾

English Translation

And they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad. (6)

English Transliteration

Waqaloo ya ayyuha allathee nuzzila AAalayhi alththikru innaka lamajnoonun (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

They say: "O thou to whom the Message is being revealed! truly thou art mad (or possessed)! (6)

لَّوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ ﴿7﴾

English Translation

Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?" (7)

English Transliteration

Law ma tateena bialmalaikati in kunta mina alssadiqeena (7)

Tafsir of Verse 7

"Why bringest thou not angels to us if it be that thou hast the Truth?" (7)

مَا نُنَزِّلُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوٓا۟ إِذًا مُّنظَرِينَ ﴿8﴾

English Translation

We do not send down the angels except with truth; and the disbelievers would not then be reprieved. (8)

English Transliteration

Ma nunazzilu almalaikata illa bialhaqqi wama kanoo ithan munthareena (8)

Tafsir of Verse 8

We send not the angels down except for just cause: if they came (to the ungodly), behold! no respite would they have! (8)

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا ٱلذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَٰفِظُونَ ﴿9﴾

English Translation

Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur\'an and indeed, We will be its guardian. (9)

English Transliteration

Inna nahnu nazzalna alththikra wainna lahu lahafithoona (9)

Tafsir of Verse 9

We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption). (9)

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ فِى شِيَعِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿10﴾

English Translation

And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muhammad], among the sects of the former peoples. (10)

English Transliteration

Walaqad arsalna min qablika fee shiyaAAi alawwaleena (10)

Tafsir of Verse 10

We did send messengers before thee amongst the religious sects of old: (10)

وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ ﴿11﴾

English Translation

And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him. (11)

English Transliteration

Wama yateehim min rasoolin illa kanoo bihi yastahzioona (11)

Tafsir of Verse 11

But never came a messenger to them but they mocked him. (11)

كَذَٰلِكَ نَسْلُكُهُۥ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ ﴿12﴾

English Translation

Thus do We insert denial into the hearts of the criminals. (12)

English Transliteration

Kathalika naslukuhu fee quloobi almujrimeena (12)

Tafsir of Verse 12

Even so do we let it creep into the hearts of the sinners - (12)

لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ ۖ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿13﴾

English Translation

They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples. (13)

English Transliteration

La yuminoona bihi waqad khalat sunnatu alawwaleena (13)

Tafsir of Verse 13

That they should not believe in the (Message); but the ways of the ancients have passed away. (13)

وَلَوْ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَابًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَظَلُّوا۟ فِيهِ يَعْرُجُونَ ﴿14﴾

English Translation

And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend, (14)

English Transliteration

Walaw fatahna AAalayhim baban mina alssamai fathalloo feehi yaAArujoona (14)

Tafsir of Verse 14

Even if We opened out to them a gate from heaven, and they were to continue (all day) ascending therein, (14)

لَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَٰرُنَا بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌ مَّسْحُورُونَ ﴿15﴾

English Translation

They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic." (15)

English Transliteration

Laqaloo innama sukkirat absaruna bal nahnu qawmun mashooroona (15)

Tafsir of Verse 15

They would only say: "Our eyes have been intoxicated: Nay, we have been bewitched by sorcery." (15)

262
