English Translation
Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur\'an. (1)

Alifla mra tilka a ya tu alkita bi waqura nin mubeenin (1)

Alif Lam Ra. Those are the signs of the Book and of a manifest Koran. (1)
English Translation
Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims. (2)
English Transliteration
Rubama yawaddu allath eena kafaroo law ka noo muslimeena (2)

Perchance the unbelievers will wish that they had surrendered: (2)
English Translation
Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know. (3)
English Transliteration
Th arhum yakuloo wayatamattaAAoo wayulhihimu alamalu fasawfa yaAAlamoona (3)

leave them to eat, and to take their joy, and to be bemused by hope; certainly they will soon know! (3)
English Translation
And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree. (4)
English Transliteration
Wama ahlakna min qaryatin illa walaha kita bun maAAloomun (4)

Never a city have We destroyed, but it had a known decree, (4)
English Translation
No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter. (5)
English Transliteration
Ma tasbiqu min ommatin ajalaha wama yastakhiroona (5)

and no nation outstrips its term, nor do they put it back. (5)
English Translation
And they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad. (6)
English Transliteration
Waqa loo ya ayyuha allath ee nuzzila AAalayhi al thth ikru innaka lamajnoonun (6)

They say: 'Thou, upon whom the Remembrance is sent down, thou art assuredly possessed! (6)
English Translation
Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?" (7)
English Transliteration
Law ma tateena bia lmala ikati in kunta mina al ssa diqeena (7)

Why dost thou not bring the angels unto us, if thou speakest truly?' (7)
English Translation
We do not send down the angels except with truth; and the disbelievers would not then be reprieved. (8)
English Transliteration
Ma nunazzilu almala ikata illa bia lh aqqi wama ka noo ith an munth areena (8)

We send not down the angels, save with truth; (8)
English Translation
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur\'an and indeed, We will be its guardian. (9)
English Transliteration
Inna nah nu nazzalna al thth ikra wainna lahu laha fith oona (9)

then they would not be respited. It is We who have sent down the Remembrance, and We watch over it. (9)
English Translation
And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muhammad], among the sects of the former peoples. (10)

Walaqad arsalna min qablika fee shiyaAAi alawwaleena (10)

Indeed, We sent Messengers before thee, among the factions of the ancients, (10)
English Translation
And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him. (11)
English Transliteration
Wama yateehim min rasoolin illa ka noo bihi yastahzioona (11)

and not a single Messenger came to them, but they mocked at him; (11)
English Translation
Thus do We insert denial into the hearts of the criminals. (12)
English Transliteration
Katha lika naslukuhu fee quloobi almujrimeena (12)

even so We cause it to enter into the hearts of the sinners -- (12)

They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples. (13)
English Transliteration
La yuminoona bihi waqad khalat sunnatu alawwaleena (13)

they believe not in it, though the wont of the ancients is already gone. (13)
English Translation
And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend, (14)
English Transliteration
Walaw fatah na AAalayhim ba ban mina al ssama i fath alloo feehi yaAArujoona (14)

Though We opened to them a gate in heaven, and still they mounted through it, (14)
English Translation
They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic." (15)
English Transliteration
Laqa loo innama sukkirat absa runa bal nah nu qawmun mash ooroona (15)

yet would they say, 'Our eyes have been dazzled; nay, we are a people bewitched!' (15)
