وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلْبُرُوجِ ﴿1﴾ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْمَوْعُودِ ﴿2﴾ وَشَاهِدٍ وَمَشْهُودٍ ﴿3﴾ قُتِلَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْأُخْدُودِ ﴿4﴾ ٱلنَّارِ ذَاتِ ٱلْوَقُودِ ﴿5﴾ إِذْ هُمْ عَلَيْهَا قُعُودٌ ﴿6﴾ وَهُمْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَفْعَلُونَ بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ شُهُودٌ ﴿7﴾ وَمَا نَقَمُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّآ أَن يُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَمِيدِ ﴿8﴾ ٱلَّذِى لَهُۥ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ شَهِيدٌ ﴿9﴾ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا۟ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوبُوا۟ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ ٱلْحَرِيقِ ﴿10﴾ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمْ جَنَّٰتٌ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْكَبِيرُ ﴿11﴾ إِنَّ بَطْشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيدٌ ﴿12﴾ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ يُبْدِئُ وَيُعِيدُ ﴿13﴾ وَهُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلْوَدُودُ ﴿14﴾ ذُو ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْمَجِيدُ ﴿15﴾ فَعَّالٌ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ ﴿16﴾ هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْجُنُودِ ﴿17﴾ فِرْعَوْنَ وَثَمُودَ ﴿18﴾ بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِى تَكْذِيبٍ ﴿19﴾ وَٱللَّهُ مِن وَرَآئِهِم مُّحِيطٌۢ ﴿20﴾ بَلْ هُوَ قُرْءَانٌ مَّجِيدٌ ﴿21﴾ فِى لَوْحٍ مَّحْفُوظٍۭ ﴿22﴾

Tafsir of Surah Al-Burooj (Arberry: A. J. Arberry)

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلْبُرُوجِ ﴿1﴾

English Translation

By the sky containing great stars (1)

English Transliteration

Waalssamai thati alburooji (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

By heaven of the constellations, (1)

وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْمَوْعُودِ ﴿2﴾

English Translation

And [by] the promised Day (2)

English Transliteration

Waalyawmi almawAAoodi (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

by the promised day, (2)

وَشَاهِدٍ وَمَشْهُودٍ ﴿3﴾

English Translation

And [by] the witness and what is witnessed, (3)

English Transliteration

Washahidin wamashhoodin (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

by the witness and the witnessed, (3)

قُتِلَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْأُخْدُودِ ﴿4﴾

English Translation

Cursed were the companions of the trench (4)

English Transliteration

Qutila ashabu alukhdoodi (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

slain were the Men of the Pit, (4)

ٱلنَّارِ ذَاتِ ٱلْوَقُودِ ﴿5﴾

English Translation

[Containing] the fire full of fuel, (5)

English Transliteration

Alnnari thati alwaqoodi (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

the fire abounding in fuel, (5)

إِذْ هُمْ عَلَيْهَا قُعُودٌ ﴿6﴾

English Translation

When they were sitting near it (6)

English Transliteration

Ith hum AAalayha quAAoodun (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

when they were seated over it (6)

وَهُمْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَفْعَلُونَ بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ شُهُودٌ ﴿7﴾

English Translation

And they, to what they were doing against the believers, were witnesses. (7)

English Transliteration

Wahum AAala ma yafAAaloona bialmumineena shuhoodun (7)

Tafsir of Verse 7

and were themselves witnesses of what they did with the believers. (7)

وَمَا نَقَمُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّآ أَن يُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَمِيدِ ﴿8﴾

English Translation

And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy, (8)

English Transliteration

Wama naqamoo minhum illa an yuminoo biAllahi alAAazeezi alhameedi (8)

Tafsir of Verse 8

They took revenge on them only because they believed in the All-mighty, the Al-laudable, (8)

ٱلَّذِى لَهُۥ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ شَهِيدٌ ﴿9﴾

English Translation

To whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, over all things, is Witness. (9)

English Transliteration

Allathee lahu mulku alssamawati waalardi waAllahu AAala kulli shayin shaheedun (9)

Tafsir of Verse 9

God to whom belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and God is Witness over everything. (9)

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا۟ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوبُوا۟ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ ٱلْحَرِيقِ ﴿10﴾

English Translation

Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire. (10)

English Transliteration

Inna allatheena fatanoo almumineena waalmuminati thumma lam yatooboo falahum AAathabu jahannama walahum AAathabu alhareeqi (10)

Tafsir of Verse 10

Those who persecute the believers, men and women, and then have not repented, there awaits them the chastisement of Gehenna, and there awaits them the chastisement of the burning. (10)

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمْ جَنَّٰتٌ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْكَبِيرُ ﴿11﴾

English Translation

Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great attainment. (11)

English Transliteration

Inna allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati lahum jannatun tajree min tahtiha alanharu thalika alfawzu alkabeeru (11)

Tafsir of Verse 11

Those who believe, and do righteous deeds, for them await gardens underneath which rivers flow; that is the great triumph. (11)

إِنَّ بَطْشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيدٌ ﴿12﴾

English Translation

Indeed, the vengeance of your Lord is severe. (12)

English Transliteration

Inna batsha rabbika lashadeedun (12)

Tafsir of Verse 12

Surely thy Lord's assault is terrible. (12)

إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ يُبْدِئُ وَيُعِيدُ ﴿13﴾

English Translation

Indeed, it is He who originates [creation] and repeats. (13)

English Transliteration

Innahu huwa yubdio wayuAAeedu (13)

Tafsir of Verse 13

Surely it is He who originates, and brings again, (13)

وَهُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلْوَدُودُ ﴿14﴾

English Translation

And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate, (14)

English Transliteration

Wahuwa alghafooru alwadoodu (14)

Tafsir of Verse 14

and He is the All-forgiving, the All-loving, (14)

ذُو ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْمَجِيدُ ﴿15﴾

English Translation

Honorable Owner of the Throne, (15)

English Transliteration

Thoo alAAarshi almajeedi (15)

Tafsir of Verse 15

Lord of the Throne, the All-glorious, (15)

فَعَّالٌ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ ﴿16﴾

English Translation

Effecter of what He intends. (16)

English Transliteration

FaAAAAalun lima yureedu (16)

Tafsir of Verse 16

Performer of what He desires. (16)

هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْجُنُودِ ﴿17﴾

English Translation

Has there reached you the story of the soldiers - (17)

English Transliteration

Hal ataka hadeethu aljunoodi (17)

Tafsir of Verse 17

Hast thou received the story of the hosts, (17)

فِرْعَوْنَ وَثَمُودَ ﴿18﴾

English Translation

[Those of] Pharaoh and Thamud? (18)

English Transliteration

FirAAawna wathamooda (18)

Tafsir of Verse 18

Pharaoh and Thamood? (18)

بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِى تَكْذِيبٍ ﴿19﴾

English Translation

But they who disbelieve are in [persistent] denial, (19)

English Transliteration

Bali allatheena kafaroo fee taktheebin (19)

Tafsir of Verse 19

Nay, but the unbelievers still cry lies, (19)

وَٱللَّهُ مِن وَرَآئِهِم مُّحِيطٌۢ ﴿20﴾

English Translation

While Allah encompasses them from behind. (20)

English Transliteration

WaAllahu min waraihim muheetun (20)

Tafsir of Verse 20

and God is behind them, encompassing. (20)

بَلْ هُوَ قُرْءَانٌ مَّجِيدٌ ﴿21﴾

English Translation

But this is an honored Qur\'an (21)

English Transliteration

Bal huwa quranun majeedun (21)

Tafsir of Verse 21

Nay, but it is a glorious Koran, (21)

فِى لَوْحٍ مَّحْفُوظٍۭ ﴿22﴾

English Translation

[Inscribed] in a Preserved Slate. (22)

Fee lawhin mahfoothin (22)

in a guarded tablet. (22)
