حَقِيقٌ عَلَىٰٓ أَن لَّآ أَقُولَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلْحَقَّ ۚ قَدْ جِئْتُكُم بِبَيِّنَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ فَأَرْسِلْ مَعِىَ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ قَالَ إِن كُنتَ جِئْتَ بِـَٔايَةٍ فَأْتِ بِهَآ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ فَأَلْقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِىَ ثُعْبَانٌ مُّبِينٌ وَنَزَعَ يَدَهُۥ فَإِذَا هِىَ بَيْضَآءُ لِلنَّٰظِرِينَ قَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ مِن قَوْمِ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَسَٰحِرٌ عَلِيمٌ يُرِيدُ أَن يُخْرِجَكُم مِّنْ أَرْضِكُمْ ۖ فَمَاذَا تَأْمُرُونَ قَالُوٓا۟ أَرْجِهْ وَأَخَاهُ وَأَرْسِلْ فِى ٱلْمَدَآئِنِ حَٰشِرِينَ يَأْتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَٰحِرٍ عَلِيمٍ وَجَآءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ فِرْعَوْنَ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ لَنَا لَأَجْرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحْنُ ٱلْغَٰلِبِينَ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَإِنَّكُمْ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ قَالُوا۟ يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِمَّآ أَن تُلْقِىَ وَإِمَّآ أَن نَّكُونَ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُلْقِينَ قَالَ أَلْقُوا۟ ۖ فَلَمَّآ أَلْقَوْا۟ سَحَرُوٓا۟ أَعْيُنَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَٱسْتَرْهَبُوهُمْ وَجَآءُو بِسِحْرٍ عَظِيمٍ ۞ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنْ أَلْقِ عَصَاكَ ۖ فَإِذَا هِىَ تَلْقَفُ مَا يَأْفِكُونَ فَوَقَعَ ٱلْحَقُّ وَبَطَلَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ فَغُلِبُوا۟ هُنَالِكَ وَٱنقَلَبُوا۟ صَٰغِرِينَ وَأُلْقِىَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سَٰجِدِينَ

Tafsir of Surah Al-A'raaf (Yusuf Ali: Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

English Translation

[Who is] obligated not to say about Allah except the truth. I have come to you with clear evidence from your Lord, so send with me the Children of Israel."

English Transliteration

Haqeequn AAala an la aqoola AAala Allahi illa alhaqqa qad jitukum bibayyinatin min rabbikum faarsil maAAiya banee israeela

One for whom it is right to say nothing but truth about Allah. Now have I come unto you (people), from your Lord, with a clear (Sign): So let the Children of Israel depart along with me."

English Translation

[Pharaoh] said, "If you have come with a sign, then bring it forth, if you should be of the truthful."

English Transliteration

Qala in kunta jita biayatin fati biha in kunta mina alssadiqeena

(Pharaoh) said: "If indeed thou hast come with a Sign, show it forth,- if thou tellest the truth."

English Translation

So Moses threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent, manifest.

English Transliteration

Faalqa AAasahu faitha hiya thuAAbanun mubeenun

Then (Moses) threw his rod, and behold! it was a serpent, plain (for all to see)!

English Translation

And he drew out his hand; thereupon it was white [with radiance] for the observers.

English Transliteration

WanazaAAa yadahu faitha hiya baydao lilnnathireena

And he drew out his hand, and behold! it was white to all beholders!

English Translation

Said the eminent among the people of Pharaoh, "Indeed, this is a learned magician

English Transliteration

Qala almalao min qawmi firAAawna inna hatha lasahirun AAaleemun

Said the Chiefs of the people of Pharaoh: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed.

English Translation

Who wants to expel you from your land [through magic], so what do you instruct?"

English Transliteration

Yureedu an yukhrijakum min ardikum famatha tamuroona

"His plan is to get you out of your land: then what is it ye counsel?"

English Translation

They said, "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers

English Transliteration

Qaloo arjih waakhahu waarsil fee almadaini hashireena

They said: "Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while); and send to the cities men to collect-

English Translation

Who will bring you every learned magician."

English Transliteration

Yatooka bikulli sahirin AAaleemin

And bring up to thee all (our) sorcerers well-versed."

English Translation

And the magicians came to Pharaoh. They said, "Indeed for us is a reward if we are the predominant."

English Transliteration

Wajaa alssaharatu firAAawna qaloo inna lana laajran in kunna nahnu alghalibeena

So there came the sorcerers to Pharaoh: They said, "of course we shall have a (suitable) reward if we win!"

English Translation

He said, "Yes, and, [moreover], you will be among those made near [to me]."

English Transliteration

Qala naAAam wainnakum lamina almuqarrabeena

He said: "Yea, (and more),- for ye shall in that case be (raised to posts) nearest (to my person)."

English Translation

They said, "O Moses, either you throw [your staff], or we will be the ones to throw [first]."

English Transliteration

Qaloo ya moosa imma an tulqiya waimma an nakoona nahnu almulqeena

They said: "O Moses! wilt thou throw (first), or shall we have the (first) throw?"

English Translation

He said, "Throw," and when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck terror into them, and they presented a great [feat of] magic.

English Transliteration

Qala alqoo falamma alqaw saharoo aAAyuna alnnasi waistarhaboohum wajaoo bisihrin AAatheemin

Said Moses: "Throw ye (first)." So when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people, and struck terror into them: for they showed a great (feat of) magic.

English Translation

And We inspired to Moses, "Throw your staff," and at once it devoured what they were falsifying.

English Transliteration

Waawhayna ila moosa an alqi AAasaka faitha hiya talqafu ma yafikoona

We put it into Moses's mind by inspiration: "Throw (now) thy rod": and behold! it swallows up straight away all the falsehoods which they fake!

English Translation

So the truth was established, and abolished was what they were doing.

English Transliteration

FawaqaAAa alhaqqu wabatala ma kanoo yaAAmaloona

Thus truth was confirmed, and all that they did was made of no effect.

English Translation

And Pharaoh and his people were overcome right there and became debased.

English Transliteration

Faghuliboo hunalika wainqalaboo saghireena

So the (great ones) were vanquished there and then, and were made to look small.

English Translation

And the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allah].

English Transliteration

Waolqiya alssaharatu sajideena

But the sorcerers fell down prostrate in adoration.
