أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ ﴿1﴾ وَوَضَعْنَا عَنكَ وِزْرَكَ ﴿2﴾ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ ﴿3﴾ وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ ﴿4﴾ فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا ﴿5﴾ إِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا ﴿6﴾ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَٱنصَبْ ﴿7﴾ وَإِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَٱرْغَب ﴿8﴾

Tafsir of Surah Ash-Sharh (Arberry: A. J. Arberry)

أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ ﴿1﴾

English Translation

Did We not expand for you, [O Muhammad], your breast? (1)

English Transliteration

Alam nashrah laka sadraka (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

Did We not expand thy breast for thee (1)

وَوَضَعْنَا عَنكَ وِزْرَكَ ﴿2﴾

English Translation

And We removed from you your burden (2)

English Transliteration

WawadaAAna AAanka wizraka (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

and lift from thee thy burden, (2)

ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ ﴿3﴾

English Translation

Which had weighed upon your back (3)

English Transliteration

Allathee anqada thahraka (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

the burden that weighed down thy back? (3)

وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ ﴿4﴾

English Translation

And raised high for you your repute. (4)

English Transliteration

WarafaAAna laka thikraka (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

Did We not exalt thy fame? (4)

فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا ﴿5﴾

English Translation

For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. (5)

English Transliteration

Fainna maAAa alAAusri yusran (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

So truly with hardship comes ease, (5)

إِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا ﴿6﴾

English Translation

Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. (6)

English Transliteration

Inna maAAa alAAusri yusran (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

truly with hardship comes ease.' (6)

فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَٱنصَبْ ﴿7﴾

English Translation

So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship]. (7)

English Transliteration

Faitha faraghta fainsab (7)

Tafsir of Verse 7

So when thou art empty, labour, (7)

وَإِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَٱرْغَب ﴿8﴾

English Translation

And to your Lord direct [your] longing. (8)

English Transliteration

Waila rabbika fairghab (8)

Tafsir of Verse 8

and let thy Lord be thy Quest. (8)
