English Translation
Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. (3)
English Transliteration
Inna anzalna hu fee laylatin muba rakatin inna kunna munth ireena (3)

We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). (3)
English Translation
On that night is made distinct every precise matter - (4)

Feeha yufraqu kullu amrin h akeemin (4)

In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, (4)
English Translation
[Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5)

Amran min AAindina inna kunna mursileena (5)

By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), (5)

As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. (6)

Rah matan min rabbika innahu huwa al ssameeAAu alAAaleemu (6)

As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); (6)
English Translation
Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. (7)
English Transliteration
Rabbi al ssama wa ti waa lard i wama baynahuma in kuntum mooqineena (7)

The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. (7)
English Translation
There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. (8)
English Transliteration
La ila ha illa huwa yuh yee wayumeetu rabbukum warabbu a ba ikumu alawwaleena (8)

There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. (8)

But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. (9)

Bal hum fee shakkin yalAAaboona (9)

Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. (10)

Fai rtaqib yawma tatee al ssama o bidukha nin mubeenin (10)

Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, (10)
English Translation
Covering the people; this is a painful torment. (11)
English Transliteration
Yaghsha al nna sa hatha AAatha bun aleemun (11)

Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. (11)

[They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." (12)
English Transliteration
Rabbana ikshif AAanna alAAatha ba inna muminoona (12)

(They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" (12)
English Translation
How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. (13)

Anna lahumu al thth ikra waqad ja ahum rasoolun mubeenun (13)

How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- (13)
English Translation
Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." (14)
English Transliteration
Thumma tawallaw AAanhu waqa loo muAAallamun majnoonun (14)

Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" (14)
English Translation
Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. (15)

Inna ka shifoo alAAatha bi qaleelan innakum AAa idoona (15)

We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). (15)
English Translation
The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. (16)

Yawma nabt ishu albat shata alkubra inna muntaqimoona (16)

One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! (16)
English Translation
And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, (17)

Walaqad fatanna qablahum qawma firAAawna waja ahum rasoolun kareemun (17)

We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, (17)
English Translation
[Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," (18)
