أَلَمْ تَكُنْ ءَايَٰتِى تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَكُنتُم بِهَا تُكَذِّبُونَ قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا غَلَبَتْ عَلَيْنَا شِقْوَتُنَا وَكُنَّا قَوْمًا ضَآلِّينَ رَبَّنَآ أَخْرِجْنَا مِنْهَا فَإِنْ عُدْنَا فَإِنَّا ظَٰلِمُونَ قَالَ ٱخْسَـُٔوا۟ فِيهَا وَلَا تُكَلِّمُونِ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْ عِبَادِى يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا وَٱرْحَمْنَا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ فَٱتَّخَذْتُمُوهُمْ سِخْرِيًّا حَتَّىٰٓ أَنسَوْكُمْ ذِكْرِى وَكُنتُم مِّنْهُمْ تَضْحَكُونَ إِنِّى جَزَيْتُهُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ بِمَا صَبَرُوٓا۟ أَنَّهُمْ هُمُ ٱلْفَآئِزُونَ قَٰلَ كَمْ لَبِثْتُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ عَدَدَ سِنِينَ قَالُوا۟ لَبِثْنَا يَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍ فَسْـَٔلِ ٱلْعَآدِّينَ قَٰلَ إِن لَّبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ۖ لَّوْ أَنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَفَحَسِبْتُمْ أَنَّمَا خَلَقْنَٰكُمْ عَبَثًا وَأَنَّكُمْ إِلَيْنَا لَا تُرْجَعُونَ فَتَعَٰلَى ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱلْحَقُّ ۖ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْكَرِيمِ وَمَن يَدْعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَ لَا بُرْهَٰنَ لَهُۥ بِهِۦ فَإِنَّمَا حِسَابُهُۥ عِندَ رَبِّهِۦٓ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُفْلِحُ ٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ وَقُل رَّبِّ ٱغْفِرْ وَٱرْحَمْ وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

Tafsir of Surah Al-Muminoon (Yusuf Ali: Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

English Translation

[It will be said]. "Were not My verses recited to you and you used to deny them?"

English Transliteration

Alam takun ayatee tutla AAalaykum fakuntum biha tukaththiboona

"Were not My Signs rehearsed to you, and ye did but treat them as falsehood?"

English Translation

They will say, "Our Lord, our wretchedness overcame us, and we were a people astray.

English Transliteration

Qaloo rabbana ghalabat AAalayna shiqwatuna wakunna qawman dalleena

They will say: "our Lord! Our misfortune overwhelmed us, and we became a people astray!

English Translation

Our Lord, remove us from it, and if we were to return [to evil], we would indeed be wrongdoers."

English Transliteration

Rabbana akhrijna minha fain AAudna fainna thalimoona

"Our Lord! bring us out of this: if ever we return (to Evil), then shall we be wrong-doers indeed!"

English Translation

He will say, "Remain despised therein and do not speak to Me.

English Transliteration

Qala ikhsaoo feeha wala tukallimooni

He will say: "Be ye driven into it (with ignominy)! And speak ye not to Me!

English Translation

Indeed, there was a party of My servants who said, \'Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You are the best of the merciful.\'

English Transliteration

Innahu kana fareequn min AAibadee yaqooloona rabbana amanna faighfir lana wairhamna waanta khayru alrrahimeena

"A part of My servants there was, who used to pray 'our Lord! we believe; then do Thou forgive us, and have mercy upon us: For Thou art the Best of those who show mercy!"

English Translation

But you took them in mockery to the point that they made you forget My remembrance, and you used to laugh at them.

English Transliteration

Faittakhathtumoohum sikhriyyan hatta ansawkum thikree wakuntum minhum tadhakoona

"But ye treated them with ridicule, so much so that (ridicule of) them made you forget My Message while ye were laughing at them!

English Translation

Indeed, I have rewarded them this Day for their patient endurance - that they are the attainers [of success]."

English Transliteration

Innee jazaytuhumu alyawma bima sabaroo annahum humu alfaizoona

"I have rewarded them this Day for their patience and constancy: they are indeed the ones that have achieved Bliss..."

English Translation

[Allah] will say, "How long did you remain on earth in number of years?"

English Transliteration

Qala kam labithtum fee alardi AAadada sineena

He will say: "What number of years did ye stay on earth?"

English Translation

They will say, "We remained a day or part of a day; ask those who enumerate."

English Transliteration

Qaloo labithna yawman aw baAAda yawmin faisali alAAaddeena

They will say: "We stayed a day or part of a day: but ask those who keep account."

English Translation

He will say, "You stayed not but a little - if only you had known.

English Transliteration

Qala in labithtum illa qaleelan law annakum kuntum taAAlamoona

He will say: "Ye stayed not but a little,- if ye had only known!

English Translation

Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?"

English Transliteration

Afahasibtum annama khalaqnakum AAabathan waannakum ilayna la turjaAAoona

"Did ye then think that We had created you in jest, and that ye would not be brought back to Us (for account)?"

English Translation

So exalted is Allah, the Sovereign, the Truth; there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Noble Throne.

English Transliteration

FataAAala Allahu almaliku alhaqqu la ilaha illa huwa rabbu alAAarshi alkareemi

Therefore exalted be Allah, the King, the Reality: there is no god but He, the Lord of the Throne of Honour!

English Translation

And whoever invokes besides Allah another deity for which he has no proof - then his account is only with his Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will not succeed.

English Transliteration

Waman yadAAu maAAa Allahi ilahan akhara la burhana lahu bihi fainnama hisabuhu AAinda rabbihi innahu la yuflihu alkafiroona

If anyone invokes, besides Allah, Any other god, he has no authority therefor; and his reckoning will be only with his Lord! and verily the Unbelievers will fail to win through!

English Translation

And, [O Muhammad], say, "My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful."

English Transliteration

Waqul rabbi ighfir wairham waanta khayru alrrahimeena

So say: "O my Lord! grant Thou forgiveness and mercy for Thou art the Best of those who show mercy!"
